Abstract

LEARNING OBJECTIVES 

• Identify the signs and symptoms associated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)

• Explain the process involved in preparticipation screening of competitive athletes for HCM, including the recommendations of the American Heart Association

• Understand the treatment for HCM

ECG can diagnose HCM, a known cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes. Conflicting opinions on its clinical value and concerns about costs inhibit routine use of the test.
