New economic activity and social change data shows decreases in: 💳 Bank of England credit/debit card purchases 🛍️️ UK retail footfall The total number of online job adverts on 19 April 2024 was broadly unchanged when compared with the previous week. This was 19% below the level seen for the equivalent period of 2023. The system average price of gas increased by 14% in the week to 21 April 2024 when compared with the previous week. We’ve released a new article, Ship crossings through global maritime passages: January 2022 to April 2024. Ship crossings through the Suez Canal and the Bab-Al Mandab Strait began to decline from mid-December 2023, with the Suez Canal experiencing a decrease in crossings by 66% by the first week of April 2024 compared with the previous year. The Bab-Al Mandab Strait had a 59% decrease in crossings volume for the same week. Read the full release ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e2JFG4dM

Public sector net borrowing excluding public sector banks was £120.7 billion in the 2023 to 2024 financial year, £7.6 billion less than in the previous year and around a third of that in 2020 to 2021 during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Public sector net debt excluding public sector banks was £2,694.2 billion at the end of March 2024, provisionally estimated to be around 98.3% of the UK’s annual gross domestic product. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/erV46mUE

Retail sales registered no growth in March 2024. Hardware stores, furniture shops, petrol stations and clothing stores all reported a rise in sales. However, these gains were offset by falling food sales and in department stores where retailers say higher prices hit trading. Looking at the longer-term picture, across the latest three months retail sales increased after a poor Christmas. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eZb_H4M4

We’ve published the latest UK labour market figures. Headline indicators for the UK labour market for December 2023 to February 2024 show: ▪️ employment was 74.5% ▪️ unemployment was 4.2% ▪️ economic inactivity was 22.2% ▪️ The number of vacancies in January to March 2024 was 916,000, a decrease of 13,000 on the previous 3 months. They were down by 204,000 from a year before, although they remained 120,000 above their pre #COVID19 levels. ▪️ Regular pay (excluding bonuses) in November 2023 to January 2024 was up 6.0% on the year before. ▪️ From HMRC’s PAYE RTI data, the revised number of employees on the payroll was down 18,000 in February 2024 and provisional estimates for March 2024 were down another 67,000. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ePjvYw6G
