Bangladesh has been on a mission to ensure communities across the country have access to a reliable electricity supply. As part of this effort, we helped finance the Solartech Energy plant in the Teknaf district of Southern Bangladesh. Having visited a local school in the district, we saw first-hand how access to reliable power from the national grid is transforming lives. Teachers tell us their students can now study at night without worrying about having light, making it easier for them to work hard and go after their dreams.

The UAE is strategically located in the centre of Asia, Africa and Europe and has long been a gateway connecting these regions. The government’s long-standing open trade regime, commitment to high-quality infrastructure, and business-friendly policies have shaped this market into a leading hub for trade, finance and commerce in the Middle East. Did you know that seaweed-based bioplastic can biodegrade in 4-6 weeks?   Seaweed could help to replace one of the most harmful types of petroleum-based plastics: single-use packaging.   The theme of this year’s Earth Day, Planet vs Plastic, highlights the widespread risks of plastic pollution to our environment and to human health, and seeks to build support for a rapid reduction in the production of all types of plastic globally.   Seaweed-based bioplastics can biodegrade much faster than traditional plastic, which can take hundreds of years. Last week, our Board members, including José Vinals, Bill Winters, Ben Hung and others, gathered in Shanghai and Beijing. Together, they engaged with government representatives, colleagues, clients and the local communities, immersing themselves in discussions centered around the theme of ‘Connecting the world, Knotting the opportunities’. In addition to sharing their views on how the bank is uniquely well-positioned to be a connector between Mainland China and the rest of the world, they also exchanged insights on the structural and long-term opportunities - despite some short-term challenges - that China’s continuous opening up will present for our clients. These span from regional economic integration initiatives, cross border trade, and infrastructure building, to green and transition finance, RMB services, and wealth management. From visiting the showroom at Ant Group, witnessing the cutting-edge delivery vehicle of JD.COM to participating in the Futuremakers workshop and hosting clients, partners and government representatives at a Board dinner, it was an activity-packed and fruitful week for all involved. Our China team’s very own Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) band further delighted dinner guests with a live performance of ‘Rainbow Sky,’ a self-composed melody showcasing the importance of D&I and adding a memorable touch to the evening.
