The S&P 500 is wrapping up its two busiest weeks of earnings reports this quarter, with more than half of the index reporting results. Companies have largely surprised to the upside, with the index pacing at earnings growth of 5.5% this quarter, per Evercore ISI. Stock reactions have been mixed, though, as the prospect of interest rates remaining high for longer than expected hangs over markets and many companies struggle to impress investors given the market's roaring rally going into the reporting period. https://yhoo.it/44tWzr5

Apple stock rose as much as 6% early on Friday after the tech giant reported earnings that beat forecasts, sales that fell less than feared, and announced a new $110 billion share repurchase plan. The iPhone maker reported late Thursday second quarter earnings per share (EPS) of $1.53 on revenue of $90.8 billion. Wall Street was anticipating EPS of $1.50 on revenue of $90.3 billion, according to analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Apple's Greater China revenue, which includes mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong, slid 8% year over year to $16.37 billion. That, however, was better than the $15.87 billion analysts were expecting. Apple CFO Luca Maestri told Yahoo Finance's Josh Lipton that the company saw growth in mainland China during the quarter. The company's all-important iPhone revenue totaled $45.96 billion, down from $51.33 billion in Q2 last year. Apple also announced it was authorizing an additional $110 billion for share repurchases and increased its dividend to $0.25 per share. Shareholder returns plans have become a feature of Big Tech results this year, with Meta initiating a dividend in February and Alphabet announcing its own plans to start paying a dividend late last month. On #YahooFinance, Coinbase had its best quarter since 2021 but yet its stock sold off after the release of first quarter earnings Thursday afternoon. The major crypto exchange posted first quarter net income that was higher than its full year profits for all of last year. Along with profits, it beat consensus expectations among analysts across total revenue, transaction revenue and Subscriptions and Services boosted by the launch of bitcoin ETFs and subsequent crypto rally in the first three months of 2024. Without having total certainty, it looks like Wall Street did not like the second quarter outlook, which suggests weaker revenue from its core money maker, trading fees, while expenses are expected to rise. Coinbase's monthly transacting users also didn't grow over the quarter as much as the analyst consensus view hoped. That user count fell about 5% compared to last year. Looking forward, a key revenue line for Coin to keep an eye are its sequencer fees from its L-2 network, Base.

🏔 Paramount has been at the center of media merger talks for years. Now, the company's fate could soon be determined with a key negotiation window set to expire today. 😠 Paramount's nonvoting shareholders have publicly expressed concerns over the terms of a Skydance deal, which they say unfairly benefits Shari Redstone, the company's controlling shareholder, at the expense of other investors. 👀 Skydance isn't Paramount's only suitor either. Sony Pictures Entertainment and private equity firm Apollo Global Management have formally expressed interest in purchasing the media giant for $26 billion, according to a source familiar with the situation. Many twists and turns to this saga...but could it be coming to an end? I break down what we know and how we got here in my latest for Yahoo Finance #paramount #mergersandacquisitions #media #dealmaking #business #streamingwars #businessnews #financenews #skydance #apollo #sony

The company announced it was authorizing an additional $110 billion for share repurchases and increased its dividend to $0.25 per share. For a 15th consecutive time, the Federal Reserve Board was unanimous in its monetary decision — the longest stretch of no dissenting votes since a 17-meeting streak that lasted from August 2003 to August 2005. That harmonious voting pattern isn't uncommon, with the vast majority of FOMC meetings concluding with complete consensus since 2002. But when it comes to the decision to ease interest rates, cracks in the Fed's policy unity begin to show. Out of the previous 16 times that Fed voted to ease rates, only five have been unanimous. https://yhoo.it/3JJ7y6x
