❓Why did I spend last Sunday walking behind this horse-drawn coffin? Why did I allow a journalist to describe me having a breakdown in public? Truth be told, I don't think there's anything left to do but grieve the collapse of our 'civilisation'. There is nothing civilised about the atrocities we are witnessing globally. Nothing. 💡As a humanist and climate researcher I witness a lot of humanitarian breakdown - we now have 43 countries in Famine or on the brink thereof according to the World Food Program, and we have a jaw-dropping 110 armed conflicts as reported by Geneva Academy of IHL (reminder: we only have ~200 countries globally). The speed of humanitarian collapse is terrifying, and it will continue unless we all take a stand against militaries. 💣 The US Department of Defense is "the largest institutional consumer of fossil fuels in the world" and unsurprisingly, the world’s militaries refuse to declare their GHG emissions. Scientists for Global Responsibility (SGR) estimate that the industries providing military equipment create 6% of all global emissions in 2022, that's more than the entire country of Portugal's emissions in one year. So, the more conflicts we have, the quicker our biosphere collapses and life on this planet ceases for all of us. 💔 War is killing us all. To me, there are no binaries in any conflict - I stand with the innocent on all sides. This is history repeating itself and is exactly what happened to the Irish people by the British during our war. Has humanity learnt nothing? 🩸It was the blood-stained shoes and tiny shrowded body shapes which completely floored me on Sunday. No innocent civilian deserves to suffer under imperialist, colonial policies and all people sanctioning bloodshed need to be stopped. Now. Can we hold multiple truths at the same time — that both Israeli and Palestinian civilians are suffering greatly, and that those in power couldn't care less who dies? 🕯️President Pedro of Colombia's words haunt me - "we are going to barbarism if we do not change power. The life of humanity depends on the way in which humanity chooses the path to overcome the climate crisis produced by the wealth of the north. Gaza is just the first experiment in considering us all disposable." 🙄 Read that again. Disposable. Are you disposable? It's time we all take a stand for peace, and for eachother, irrespective of religion, race or national identity. Unless we ourselves want to be "disposed of" by the political elite and oligarchs of this broken world. Are you willing to demand cultures of care and compassion for your family, and all families? 🕊️ Peace demonstrations are happening throughout the globe this weekend for all innocent people, will you have the courage to show up and demand change?
