I'm interested in reading Baud's analysis to learn more, but unfortunately I've forgotten almost all of the French that I learned more than 50 years ago. I tried to find a translation--and will see if my Kindle will do it on a sample. But it would make the work more accessible to many people if there were an English translation.

J'ai acheté cet ouvrage en me disant "ah voilà une perspective plus objective, plus factuelle".
Le livre commence bien avec un chapitre "méthodologie" et puis terminologie... un bon signe.
Mais l'on est rapidement déçu. Beaucoup d'affirmations doivent faire l'objet de fact checking... Par exemple le point 2.3 page 26: "y a-t-il eu promesse que l'OTAN ne s'étendrait pas vers l'Est après 1990?" D'après l'auteur il y aurait bien eu promesse orale faite à Gorbatchev de ne pas étendre l'OTAN. L'auteur, s'il reconnaît qu'il n'y eut aucun traité écrit, ne donne aucune preuve directe d'une promesse orale, mais argumente que (p. 29) "il y a donc eu des promesses (sic) tout simplement parce que les occidentaux n'avaient pas d'autre alternative pour obtenir l'aval de l'URSS" (à la réunification allemande de 1990). Suivent des citations, non pas de Gorbatchev ou de Bush, mais de Genscher (ministre allemand des affaires étrangères en 1990) et Wörner (secrétaire général de l'OTAN en 1990), citations sorties de leur contexte et hors propos. Les lecteurs apprécieront. Peu crédible et très pro-russe, effectivement.
Notons aussi que l'auteur doit revoir ses citations latines ("promissio est servanda" p. 30 est curieux; "pacta servanda" serait plus approprié me semble-t-il).

Jacques Baud worked as a NATO analyst in the Donbas and he speaks Russian. This book is not so much about Putin himself, but about the myths that surround Putin and the Russians in general and how most of what the media says about the Russians is conditioned by generally accepted myths which are mostly without foundation. A great feature of this book is the wealth of references, mostly internet links, to articles about Ukraine and Russia in general, he gives lots of little known information about the background to the war in Ukraine and shows the biases in western media and government policies. I found lots of information here that I couldn't find elsewhere, and it's extremely timely, a book that urgently needed to be written. I would also recommend people to look on the internet for articles by Baud, some of which are translated into English and easier to read for old bods like me.
