Over March and April, Russian airpower launched a new wave of mass attacks on energy infrastructure in Ukraine. Energy generating facilities, in particular coal-fired and hydroelectric power plants, have come under the heaviest attacks. For the first time, Russia destroyed or damaged several of Ukraine's biggest power stations, including the Trypilska power station just outside Kyiv. The mix of attacks on strategic facilities and systematic strikes with guided bombs on the front-line areas indicates that Moscow sees a “window of opportunity” when Ukrainian air defense forces may be most vulnerable, said director of Defense Express Center Serhii Zgurets to the Kyiv Independent.

"Though many Russians want to end the war, President Vladimir Putin could reassure them that the West’s will was starting to crumble. Not only are Russia’s ammunition factories humming along, but Donald Trump stands a good chance of winning the U.S. presidential election and returning to the White House early next year. A Russian victory, of sorts, seemed within reach," writes Carl Bildt, former prime minister of Sweden.
Opinion: Trump is Putin's only hope now

Mobile Air Defense Fire Teams were created before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Instead of using high-tech air defense systems like the Patriot or Iris-T, they use simple military vehicles equipped machine guns to bring Russian drones down. Myroslava Tanska-Vikulova of The Counteroffensive spoke with drone hunters defending Kyiv in this guest op-ed.
