Advanced Biosystems was awarded a $3 million contract Aug. 1 by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

The eight-month contract extends a working relationship between Advanced Biosystems, a biological defense company, and Darpa, the central research and development organization for the Department of Defense.

"This most recent contract is the third in a series of contracts that funds our research into medical defenses against anthrax," says Sterling Phillips, president and CEO of Advanced Biosystems' parent, Analex (OTC BB: ANLX).

While the focus is anthrax right now, Phillips says the research could lead to the development of products that defend against other biological agents as well. In total, Advanced Biosystems has received $10 million in Darpa contracts since it was founded in 1999.

Also assisting Advanced Biosystems with work on the Darpa contract are George Mason University scientists, Stillwater, Okla.-based Sciperio, Southern Research Institute in Frederick and Structural Bioinformatics in San Diego.
