In July 2004, federal agents raided the homes of five Palestinian-American families, arresting the five dads. The first trial of the “Holy Land Foundation Five” ended in a hung jury. The second, marked by highly questionable procedures, resulted in very lengthy sentences—for “supporting terrorism” by donating to charities that the U.S. government itself and other respected international agencies had long worked with. In 2013, human rights activist and author Miko Peled started investigating this case. He discussed the miscarriages of justice with the men's lawyers and heard from the men's families about the devastating effects the case had on their lives. He also traveled to the remote federal prison complexes where the men were held to conduct deep interviews. Injustice traces the labyrinthine course of this case, presenting a terrifying picture of governmental over-reach in post-9/11 America.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"There are few books on the Israel/Palestine issue that seem as hopeful to me as this one." —Alice Walker, Pulitzer Prize-winning author

"This critically important memoir . . . is a must-read." —Naomi Wolf, author, social critic, political activist

"This is a brilliantly rendered father and son saga amidst a background that evokes Greek mythology. The father was an Israeli hero in the fight for independence and the subsequent wars that led to Israeli dominance, and a brutal occupation. The father and son difficulties can never escape the bigger picture. This is a story of admiration—and anger." —Sy Hersh

"The story of Miko Peled, his mother and father, reveals how facts, compassion and a universal sense of justice took hold and inspires this energetic and informed voice for peace." —Ralph Nader

"
Injustice is a must-read book for anyone who wants to know how after 9/11, the US criminal justice system has been undermined and become another tool utilized by the pro-Israeli camp to silence and intimidate Palestinian Americans." —Prof. Dr. Sami A. Al-Arian, Director and Public Affairs Professor, Center for Islam and Global Affairs, İslam ve Küresel İlişkiler Merkezi

"Miko is a dedicated storyteller who approaches the difficult and complex Holy Land Foundation case in a sensitive, careful, and methodical manner while doing so with a humanistic focus on the impacted families.
Injustice is a must-read." —Dr. Hatem Bazian, U.C. Berkeley and Zaytuna College

"This book is a compelling and moving account of the lives and trials of the Holy Land Foundation Five. It makes a convincing case that these 5 men are paying with long prison sentences for the 9/11 attacks, which they had nothing to do with." —Louise Cainkar, author,
Homeland Insecurity: The Arab American and Muslim American Experience after 9/11

"Miko Peled tells the riveting story of a grave miscarriage of justice against the Holy Land Five . . . A must-read for all who seek the truth about how the US and Israel work hand-in-glove to oppress the Palestinians." —Marjorie Cohn, Professor Emerita, Thomas Jefferson School of Law

"Miko Peled’s book conveys the humanity of the HLF5 and their families, and should be read widely and shared liberally to help support an international campaign for their freedom." —Michael Deutsch, human rights lawyer, People’s Law Office, Chicago, IL; co-author,
Secrets and Lies: the Persecution of Muhammad Salah; defense counsel for Muhammad Salah, Abdelhalem Ashqar, and Rasmea Odeh

"Miko Peled shines a light on one of the most egregious cases of injustice committed to date against Muslim leaders in the United States . . . His book is an ominous and important warning about the degradation of the rule of law and civil liberties that increasingly characterizes American society." —Chris Hedges, Pulitzer prize-winning journalist and former Middle East Bureau Chief, the
New York Times

Miko Peled is an author, writer, speaker, and human rights activist living in the United States. He is considered by many to be one of the clearest voices calling for justice in Palestine, support of the Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) and the creation of a single democracy with equal rights in all of historic Palestine. Miko is also a contributor to several online publications (Mint Press, The Electronic Intifada, Democracy Now, Mondoweiss), authors a blog (mikopeled.com), and produces The Miko Peled Podcast, all of which he dedicated to advocating for the creation of one democratic state with equal rights for Israelis and Palestinians.

Miko’s first book, “The General’s Son: Journey of an Israeli in Palestine”, is an autobiographical work taking the reader through the life of Peled’s family since his grandparents immigrated to Palestine in the early 20th century, describing their work and their life in detail while revealing his own journey towards a defender of Palestinian rights. Miko’s second book, “Injustice: The Story of The Holy Land Foundation Five”, describes the persecution and then the closure of what was America’s largest Muslim charity organization, The Holy Land Foundation, and the subsequent trials and convictions of five Palestinian Muslim-Americans.

He travels regularly to Palestine where he speaks and works with the popular resistance, the BDS movement, and other justice groups. As a result, he has been arrested several times by the Israeli authorities for his activism.

Miko Peled is an Israeli who has exposed the totalitarian political persecution of innocents for their constitutionally protected speech and associations. The case of the Holy Land Five particularly illustrates how a fascist government has imprisoned innocent men for sending clothing and money to children who live in poverty under a racist regime. Things won't change so long as Americans remain ignorant. Peled's book is a medicine for such ignorance.

A challenging and difficult topic that Peled brings to the American reading public...an essential and compelling
history offered in the swirl of harsh and divisive politics in the US with few to none who present such a comprehesive
compact history for HLF and their families who suffer privately as 98% of America hasn't a clue about this massive
INJUSTICE nor how it came to pass in these times. MUST READ

This is a brilliant example of great writing and painstakingly thorough investigative reporting. The story itself is shocking in its blatant injustice but the deep humanity and courage of the men imprisoned is inspiring. This was one of those books that was very hard to put down. Miko Peled is a compelling writer and journalist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely captivating, movingly written and should be made into a movie
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 3, 2022
Miko Peled constructs this tragic but compelling story in a uncomplicated, beautifully braided way- it takes you through villages in Palestine, the impact of the hostile takeovers of the Palestinian homeland, the long and winding paths of those who migrated or became refugees after their land was stolen and renamed Israel, and the price that 5 men paid for being successful in their humanitarian work and in their lives because they were Muslim and Palestinians.

Peled deserves a Pulitzer prize and a Nobel peace award for his humanitarian efforts and activism to raise awareness of the Israeli apartheid regime. God bless him

This is a great book from an Israeli who has deep knowledge of the case. I could not stop reading. The book talks about the biggest miscarriage of justice in the history of the US. I strongly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Straight forward account of unjust imprisonment.
Reviewed in Canada on September 24, 2018
This book advanced the idea that three Palestinian men were convicted in American federal court on the basis of secret evidence of having supported terrorism when what they did was to collect money in the United States and then distribute relief aid in the occupied territories to help needy families. The author, an Israeli, believes that the G. W. Bush administration was behind the prosecution and confiscation of the organizations money for political ends.

Milo Pered is an Israeli Jew whose father was a renowned General in the Israeli army and whose sister was killed by a Palestinian suicide bomber. Neverthess both he and his father have become sympathetic to the plight of the Palestinian people. This account gives the detailed and telling story of the unjust and cruel treatment given to a Palestinian Organisation by the United States authorities. An incredible account by an incredible man.

Extremely engrossing story which draws you in from the first page. Not a word is wasted in this very readable book (200 pages). The book combines the personal stories of the HLF 5, a large amount of factual background and historical context, and a very engaging narrative of the author's journey in writing the book. Excellent.
