Exeter City's League One clash at Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday has been called off following the death of Grecians striker Adam Stansfield.

The 31-year-old died of bowel cancer on Tuesday, although it was not made public until after their 3-2 Carling Cup defeat by Ipswich that evening.

The ex-Yeovil and Hereford man joined City in 2006 and went on to make 149 league appearances, scoring 38 times.

No new date has yet been set for the Victoria Road clash.

A statement on the club's website said: "The impact on everyone associated with the football club has been intense and immense.

"Dagenham & Redbridge Football Club, along with the Football League, have kindly agreed to the postponement of the game."

Stansfield, who scored seven goals in 19 appearances for Exeter last season, was diagnosed with bowel cancer following a series of tests for an abdominal complaint in April, after being admitted to hospital in March.

The League One side made a statement on its website after a 3-2 home Carling Cup defeat by Ipswich on Tuesday.

Exeter opened the Big Bank gates at St James Park on Thursday for fans who wish to pay their respects.

The Tiverton-born forward, nicknamed 'Stanno', joined Hereford on a free transfer in 2004 and two years later moved on to Exeter, where he made more than 150 first-team appearances, scoring 39 goals.
