SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE CUP
1940-1946
With no Scottish FA Cup competition running during the Second World War, the Southern Football League decided to organize a cup competition, the difference being that the initial stages would be run on group stages with the section winners progressing to the knockout stages. The last season of the Southern League Cup in 1945-46 saw an influx of clubs from the disbanded North Eastern Football League. Also present was the newly formed Stirling Albion who were promptly expelled from the Eastern Football League for taking part. The trophy was later utilized for the Victory Cup competition which was held after the war. The tournaments were a great success and after the war, the Scottish Football League continued them using the war-time format for their own League Cup competitions.
