EXETER City fans were disappointed but not downhearted after losing in the Carling Cup against Liverpool.

The Grecians were roared on by a rare sell-out crowd at St James's Park, which included singing star Joss Stone, from near Cullompton.

She went on to the pitch at half-time to huge applause to be signed up for City's supporters' trust.

Exeter put up a brave fight but, in the end, the gulf in class between the teams was evident and the Merseyside giants eventually ran out 3-1 winners.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish put out a strong side including stars such as Luis Suarez, Andy Carroll and Jordan Henderson. And goals from Suarez, Rodriguez and Carroll ended the giant-killing dreams of the capacity crowd.

But the thousands of supporters leaving the ground at the final whistle left with their heads held high

Despite the disappointment of the final result, it was still a memorable night for the lucky few who managed to get tickets. Fan Mick Webster, 36, said: "I'm really proud of the team's performance.

"When the second goal went in Exeter lost the game but they kept on trying and deserved the plaudits at the end."

Thousands more watched the game live on television in pubs and living rooms throughout the city.

The game is expected to provide a welcome financial boost for the club and Exeter's sporting director Julian Tagg said that despite the loss everyone involved with the Grecians should be very proud.

He said: "Despite the result it was always going to be a win situation for Exeter tonight.

"It has brought a lot of interest and, hopefully, a financial boost to the area."

You appear to assume everyone is from Exeter. Well I'm not, having lived for many years in my homeland (the north west). I can sincerely confirm scousers are the most loathsome, putrid, thieving, moaning, tasteless excuses for humans that I've ever had the displeasure to meet.

You are one very deluded person.”

“Ex mousehunter/moosehunter, it is/ was never my intention to move to Liverpool, i was just defending it. Yes ,we will be buying a property up north as soon as we can and get away from this over priced, overrated, small town with a village mentality, theres a saying, better to live a week as a lion than a lifetime as a lamb, i may come back and retire down here when im fed up of living but i doubt it. Like i say, Exeter is a lovely place to visit. The best of luck to you too sir.”

“I thought City were poor. Liverpool looked much the better side and they had rested loads of players. I can see Exeter going down this season, down with the Plymouth for more local Derbies.”
