General Practice Education and Training Limited (GPET) currently manages the delivery of the AGPT program through 17 Regional Training Providers.

In the 2014 Federal Budget, the Government announced that it will be significantly expanding General Practice (GP) training capacity by increasing the number of GP training places through the AGPT program from 1,200 to 1,500 new places per year by 2015.

Also announced in the Budget was the closure of General Practice Education and Training Limited (GPET) by the end of 2014 and the transfer of its GP training policy, programme and workforce planning functions to the Department of Health.

GPET will continue to manage the delivery of the AGPT program through 17 Regional Training Providers until 31 December 2014. The Department of Health will novate GPET’s current contracts with RTPs until their end date of 31 December 2015.

During 2015 a smaller number of organisations will be identified through a competitive tender to deliver high quality GP training from 2016 onwards.

The main aim of this process will be to deliver administrative efficiencies whilst minimising disruption to registrars and maintaining the high quality of GP training currently available.
