Having no experience with Macha aside from the Green Tea-Macha blend in "macha" tea bags, I'm not sure where to go with this review. I certainly can't give an accurate comparison based on the point of view of a seasoned tea-sipper, but I can tell you my experience. I'm sure there are "tea snobs" out there who would vehemently argue, but I'm still somewhat of a Macha virgin, so I ask forgiveness and suggest you take what I say with a grain of salt.

So: I ended up getting the culinary grade Macha as opposed to ceremonial. I'm not sure the difference here other than price, so I went with what was more bang for my buck. The flavor was light, earthy, and fresh. Much better than the bags I'd been steeping. I used the powder straight-up rather than mixing it into a smoothie or latte or stirring it into a batch of baked goods. I used a smallish kitchen whisk to blend it into a cup of hot water, and it dissolved 100%. So specialty whisk not required either. The drink was easy to prepare, with no messy tea bag or waiting 5-7 minutes for it to properly steep. The Culinary Grade works perfectly for what I need it for and I see no need to upgrade. Overall experience was 10/10.

As for the value for my dollar. This is very affordable. For about the price of 24 single-serving bags of my usual organic Macha-Green Tea (brand name withheld here), I can get 100 servings of Macha powder. Not only is this a far better deal, but the flavor is much better too. Not to mention much more versatile. That is, should I decide to branch out into lattes or baked goods, I can do so. And maybe I'll get daring at some point. There IS that cookie recipe that looks pretty yummy...

One thing: I do recommend you transfer the powder from the original package to a jar. Just for ease of use and less spillage. I also suggest you refrigerate after opening.

I made my first hot matcha latte today within minutes of my order being delivered. I couldn’t be happier with the result. I purchased culinary grade matcha. Loved the bright green color and ease of whisking into hot water. I combined with frothed milk and a tiny bit of sweetener. To my palate, this makes a delicious matcha latte. I’m looking forward to enjoying another tomorrow morning. If interested, my proportions are as follows: 3/4 teaspoon matcha dissolved in 2 Tablespoons hot (not boiling) water, 3/4 cup low-fat milk heated and frothed, 1/2 teaspoon simple syrup (homemade, equal parts sugar and water, simmered until sugar is dissolved, cooled, refrigerated).

I wanted to see for myself if I could make a matcha latte and so far, so good. It’s unsweetened, and the packaging said to use one teaspoon of matcha powder… but it didn’t say didn’t say how much milk (or almond milk) so I had to figure out the ratio and find the right concentration myself but it wasn’t too hard. I’m sure there’s recipes on the company’s website too, but a little hint on the packet would’ve been nice. I didn’t know if I was supposed to add 1 tsp per quart, or 1 tsp per cup. Big difference.

As stated, there’s no sweetener so you’ll probably want to add honey or simple syrup if you want it to taste like Starbucks matcha latte. But unsweetened is ok. In fact, that’s what you want in a culinary matcha product and it’s probably better if you’re watching your sugars.

i’m not sure that I love the way it’s packaged. I ordered it online, and the contents shifted so when I zipped it open, a lot of the powder was up above the zipper and it opens on the front of the bag, vs at the top so I think that a lot of product will probably get wasted that way, but this is my first foray into culinary Matcha so we’ll see if that actually becomes a problem or not.

In my opinion, the price was a bit expensive for the amount you get, just 30g. For those unaccustomed to the metric system that’s not very much at all, picture a couple of tablespoons of matcha (a very intense, green tea powder, similar in consistency to confectioners sugar or instant cocoa powder) and packaged in a small zippered opaque manufacturer’s baggie, no bigger than the size of a small, zip-lock sandwich bag.

This is my first DIY matcha product. I enjoy matcha green tea so I am certain I will buy it again, or order it already prepared in a restaurant or café but as of now I’m undecided as to whether I will buy this particular brand again. I will use this, and then amend my review, if necessary.

This product contains caffeine, but if you are using it in small amounts as a baking ingredient (ie: pound cake, green matcha shamrock shortbread cookies, etc.) one or two teaspoons of matcha powder, divided by an entire cake or a batch of cookies isn’t very much. The matcha is probably sufficiently thinned-out, so (other than the color and flavor) you probably won’t notice any jitteriness or other side-effects, like you might if you drank it straight.

*Note for Matcha Tea/ Latte drinkers:

Do not over consume this or ANY brand of matcha tea or latte. Although it did not make me jittery at all, it looks like a harmless milkshake and tastes mild and sweet, like green tea ice cream, you must remember that— unlike coffee lattes— which are water, filtered THROUGH ground-up coffee/espresso beans, and then diluted with milk and then (if it’s an iced latte) diluted further still by the residual water from the gradually melting ice cubes.

However matcha lattes are still every bit as strong as plain matcha green tea. A matcha latte it is STILL straight-up Matcha. It’s the same amount of matcha powder, whether you’re mixing it with just water for tea or with milk/almond milk for a latte— and the leaves aren’t filtered THROUGH, like coffee grounds or traditional tea bag/ball.

Matcha powder isn’t like powdered iced tea or instant coffee. With matcha powder, even though it tastes sweet and mild, remember, it’s not just “water (or milk) with a kick”.
When you drink matcha (tea or latte) you’re consuming not a filtered or dehydrated product, you’re getting the actual tea leaves— ALL of it, just in powdered form.

Matcha is tasty and had many benefits. It’s packed with antioxidants too, but remember, it still has caffeine, so caffeine-sensitive people should take care NOT to over-consume. It is generally good for you, but as always, it’s best when used in moderation. Take it easy with matcha just as you would with any other coffee or caffeinated product.

Also, if you suffer from IBS or other digestive issues and you wish to try matcha tea or latte (this or ANY brand) please Google “matcha + digestive side effects” first.

If you’ve done some quick research and still want to try it (if you have digestive issues, that is) it’s a good idea to try a little and wait 24 hours, preferably at home, to see how your digestive system tolerates it.

Matcha sometimes has a cleansing effect if consumed in excess, so if you plan to drink it, so start slow and don’t exceed the recommended serving size.

EDIT: I've now purchased and almost finished my 2nd bag and made countless lattes both hot and cold!

I'd like to start off by saying this is hands down the BEST matcha powder I've ever owned and am beyond happy that I made the purchase! This is my review after drinking 3 lattes!

PROS:

Taste - like many have already stated it does taste pretty identical to Starbucks matcha powder, that being if you're making it into a latte, only difference is that you're in control of how much and what type of sweetener you use. Honey is recommended! The matcha tastes incredibly clean, fresh and light tasting (easily adjustable to preference), very smooth and you cant seem to stop sipping it, there is no powdery or bitter aftertaste either which I love!

Blending - It's extremely easy to blend up in a standard blender, if you're not someone who wants to use the whole bamboo method this powder will suit you perfectly. A tsp into the blender with 1/4 cup warm water and blend for 30 seconds and it's perfect to pour over ice, just shake the blender to catch the bits that do get up the side! It comes out insanely smooth I love it.

Price - Cant beat the price, if you're debating whether to go for the smaller bag or larger bag GET THE LARGE, you wont regret it. For the price of the large bag you can make 50 servings that's about 5 starbucks drinks, incredibly worth. Matcha is usually quite expensive and I was questioning whether or not to even buy this but I am SO glad that I did its beyond worth the price.

Customer Service - after purchasing the matcha the company sends you a lovely email with a little booklet all about their matcha and how to use it to get the best results. Who knew you should keep it in the fridge to preserve freshness? I didn't! Theres recipes to follow to have the perfect cup which I found very useful as in the past I wasnt able to make a smooth perfect tasting cup, which is what always turned me away from purchasing matcha but after following these instructions I've been able to make the perfect matcha 3 times, my boyfriend even loved it! And it visually looks beautiful when you pour it over your iced milk!

CONS:

None. Literally, there are no cons in my opinion with this product or company. I'm beyond happy and look forward to making my matcha lattes daily and saving money at Starbucks now! Amazing ♡

My recipe is:

1 tsp matcha powder
1 tsp honey
1/4 cup warm water

Blend for 30 seconds and pour over iced vanilla almond or soy milk, for milk just fill up a mason jar to almost full but leave a little room for the matcha and its heaven.

I had been buying flavoured matcha from a well known tea retailer, and regular matcha from a bulk foods store. Both were a swampy green and the regular matcha always tasted fishy. This matcha is smooth, and so tasty. It has a gorgeous jade color and foams up nicely. I use vanilla syrup to flavour it but I think I can cut back because it has such a pleasant taste on its own. It also requires 1 tsp of matcha vs the 1 tbsp of the cheap stuff I was using, so even though it’s a small bag it’ll last a while. Totally worth it.
