Nintendo World getting its first makeover in a decade

New York's Nintendo World Store — the only one of its kind in the country — is getting a major renovation, Nintendo announced today.

In anticipation of the store's new look, which will include a 15-foot "gaming screen" and additional Wii U and Nintendo 3DS demo units, it will close for one month beginning Jan. 19. When the Rockefeller Plaza mainstay reopens Feb. 19, Nintendo will celebrate the revamped decor with giveaways, Mario and Luigi meet-and-greets, and weekend-exclusive souvenirs.

Nintendo World first opened in 2005 following a rebranding of what was once America's only Pokémon Center, which itself was established in 2001. The storefront has remained largely unchanged over the past decade, with the occasional in-store event and rotating display case offering subtle tweaks to its general aesthetic. When we visited the store in July, for instance, its second-floor gallery paid tribute to recently deceased company president Satoru Iwata.

This is one of many major changes Nintendo is planning for 2016, with the biggest being the upcoming reveal of its next console, codenamed NX. Also along the way is the company's first mobile title, Miitomo, which was officially unveiled in October. It launches on smart devices in March.
