As abortion access divides the country, the small town of Bristol is caught in the middle

Hey there, Mallorie from USA TODAY here. Our reporter Adrianna Rodriguez recently went to Bristol, which found itself on the front line of the nation’s abortion debate after the fall of Roe v. Wade in 2022.

At the crux of the divide? Bristol Women’s Health. Here’s more from her reporting:

Bristol Women’s Health, which opened on the Virginia side weeks before the Tennessee ban prompted a provider there to stop offering abortions, sees up to 150 patients a month, 90% of whom travel from states where abortion is severely restricted or banned.

“It really put this clinic at the forefront,” said Neal Osborne, a Bristol native and vice mayor who watched the events unfold from the Virginia side.

Politicians and advocates have polarized takes on abortion. But while Bristol’s abortion laws are cleanly divided by State Street, its residents tell a more nuanced story.

Terrie Driver, who works the front desk at Bristol Women's Health, said abortion is a "personal choice, not a political one."

“Nobody wants to come and have an abortion. It’s a need-based situation," she said. "This is not something people do for fun."

On Oct. 25, 2022, a crowd of more than 200 gathered in the parking lot outside the Bristol, Virginia City Council building. It was the first of several attempts to shut down the clinic, then just about 4 months old.

At that meeting, the Rev. Chris Hess, a Catholic pastor, told members the clinic was already attracting national media and extremists from both sides.

“Our city is becoming famous for all the wrong reasons," he said. "We’ve gone from being the best-kept secret in Virginia to being talked about in over half a dozen states.”

The City Council passed the zoning measure, but it has been stuck in legal and procedural limbo ever since.

From senior investigative reporter Emily Le Coz:

A national effort to unionize pharmacists against worsening conditions inside chains like CVS and Walgreens has hit a milestone as workers at the first of what organizers say will be dozens of pharmacies files a federal petition seeking the right to join The Pharmacy Guild.

The petition, expected to become public today, puts CVS on notice that workers in its Omnicare pharmacy in Las Vegas intend to hold an election to determine whether the newly formed guild should represent them in labor negotiations with the Fortune 500 company.

Nearly 30 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians work at the Omnicare location, which fills prescriptions for nursing homes across Nevada and is not a public-facing pharmacy like most of the chain's more than 9,600 locations. A simple majority is needed to win and organizers told USA TODAY they are confident they have the numbers.

“It’s time to move away from the system of abuse and intimidation,” said Bled Tanoe, an Oklahoma pharmacist and a founding member of The Pharmacy Guild, which attracted hundreds of people to its booth at the American Pharmacists Association’s annual conference in Orlando, Florida, over the weekend.

Tanoe said the guild anticipates pushback from CVS as its employees prepare for the election, which could be held within the next couple of months. The National Labor Relations Board, which oversees union activity, must first seek an agreement between the employees and their employer before green-lighting the election.

USA TODAY reached out to CVS, which said early Monday it had not yet seen the petition.

“While we haven’t had an opportunity to review any petition, we respect our employees’ right to either unionize or refrain from doing so,” said Michael DeAngelis, CVS’ executive director of corporate communications. “We believe the direct, two-way relationship we have with our colleagues is the best way to resolve workplace concerns. We continually listen to our colleagues’ feedback which helps inform our programs and policies.”

From investigative reporter Nick Penzenstadler:

For $30 and a few clicks, any child can have a box of 20 rounds of .223 rifle ammunition delivered to their doorstep within days.

That’s what Everytown for Gun Safety found when it sent people undercover recently to test federal laws prohibiting ammo sales to minors by ordering rifle rounds from seven top e-commerce retailers.

Age verification amounted to checkboxes and requirements buried in the sites’ terms of service. None required purchasers to upload an identification or have an adult sign for delivery.

Everytown surveyed well-known sites such as Brownells and Guns.com as well as bulk ammo warehouses with more opaque ownership, such as Florida-based BHAmmo.com.

“This shows how the gun industry will maximize profits over safety,” Justin Wagner, Everytown’s senior director of investigations, said this week. “Other industries like alcohol delivery and online gambling have found ways to do robust age verification, but the gun industry can’t be bothered.”

Under federal law, you have to be 18 to buy rifle and shotgun ammunition and 21 for handgun ammo. But the law doesn’t prescribe how sellers must verify age; it holds them in violation of the statute only if they “know or have reasonable cause to believe the purchaser of the ammunition is a juvenile.” Underage buyers would not technically be breaking the law until they receive the ammo.
