The Global Battery Alliance is firmly committed to working in equal partnership with our members from industry, civil society and the public sector to deliver on our ambitious vision of scaling sustainable, responsible and circular #battery value chains by 2030. Having the support of partners like the IFC - International Finance Corporation is invaluable to us in this endeavor and we are grateful for the commitment and support Diep Nguyen-van Houtte and Peter Möckel
IFC - International Finance Corporation is proud to be one of 160+ members supporting the vision of the Global Battery Alliance (GBA) of scaling sustainable, responsible and circular battery value chains as a major driver of #ParisAgreement targets by 2030. 🔋 With the industry set to grow 17-fold by 2035, putting appropriate environmental, social and governance guardrails in place is critical to ensuring that the industry not only scales fast enough but also in a sustainable manner. 🌍 The flagship initiative of the GBA is the #batterypassport, a digital product passport integrating material provenance, technical data and reporting against globally harmonized sustainability performance expectations, defined by multi-stakeholder working groups. Once fully implemented, the GBA plans to benchmark battery products based on their sustainability performance, issuing a product level ESG score to inform procurement, investment and consumer decisions. IFC is actively contributing to working groups, ensuring alignment with our performance standards and participating in the GBA’s governance both in the Battery Passport Steering Committee level and on the Board of Directors. Excited to see the bipartisan support for the Critical Material TRACE Act, which was introduced yesterday! This will help advance greater transparency for electric vehicle batteries in the U.S., including electric school buses. Through digital identifiers we can know more about: - origins of battery materials; - information on recycling, reuse pathways, and end-of-life management; - maintenance, repair, and performance data; and - associated human rights, labor, and environmental concerns. Great to see many familiar supporting organizations like Global Battery Alliance, Union of Concerned Scientists, EARTHWORKS, Circulor Many congratulations to Clara Tibbetts, Brendan Larkin and others for their tireless efforts in getting to this point. #batterypassport #transparency #traceability #batteries #electricvehicles

Exciting news from the #UnitedStates - Today, Representatives Paul D. Tonko (NY-20) and Garret Graves (LA-06) formally introduced H.R. 8187, the Critical Material Transparency and Reporting of Advanced Clean Energy (Critical Material TRACE) Act, bipartisan legislation that would improve supply chain transparency by establishing a Department of Energy program to support the development, implementation, and adoption of digital identification systems. As the first organization to have conceptualized a #batterypassport as a critical tool to bring transparency and address environmental, social and governance risks and impacts along battery supply chains, the Global Battery Alliance has been supportive of the TRACE Act efforts from the outset and we are thrilled to see it moving forward. GBA Executive Director Inga Petersen endorsed the Act on behalf of the Alliance: “The Global Battery Alliance (GBA) is pleased to see the proposed ‘‘Critical Material Transparency and Reporting in Advanced Clean Energy Act of 2024.’’ Greater transparency regarding risks and impacts across the battery value chain is key to rapidly scaling battery value chains in a sustainable manner. The Battery Passport will be an essential tool to effectively manage impacts and create consumer confidence in batteries and electric vehicles. To facilitate a race to the top regarding sustainability performance, globally harmonized performance expectations are needed and the GBA is inviting all interested stakeholders to participate in our multistakeholder efforts to define the parameters for sustainability reporting for battery value chains building on existing standards and our prior work regarding battery carbon footprint calculation, biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples’ Rights, Human Rights, child and forced labor due diligence.” More supporter statements are available here: https://lnkd.in/eqXFfSq7 A fact sheet on the Act is available here: https://lnkd.in/emHp437z https://lnkd.in/eKVF6Rw5
Cosponsors - H.R.8187 - 118th Congress (2023-2024): To direct the Secretary of Energy to establish and carry out a program to support the development, maintenance, implementation, and adoption of digital identification systems for advanced energy technologies for the purpose of increasing critical material supply chain transparency.

The Global Battery Alliance could not be more excited about today's publication of the International Energy Agency (IEA)'s flagship report on Batteries and Secure Energy Transitions! It was a privilege to participate in the consultations and peer review and we are thrilled to have the spotlight cast on the battery industry as a critical enabler of the energy transition. The report provides a wealth of data and analysis deep-diving on the role of #batteries in the global energy system. Some extremely encouraging highlights from the report: - In less than 15 years, battery costs have fallen by more than 90%, one of the fastest declines ever seen in clean energy technologies. - Today, the energy sector accounts for over 90% of overall battery demand. In 2023 alone, battery deployment in the power sector increased by more than 130% year-on-year, adding a total of 42 gigawatts (GW) to electricity systems around the world. - In the transport sector, batteries have enabled electric car sales to surge from 3 million in 2020 to almost 14 million last year, with further strong growth expected in the coming years While there is much to celebrate, we cannot afford to slow down: - To triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030 in line with COP28 targets, 1 500 GW of battery storage will be required. A shortfall in deploying enough batteries would risk stalling clean energy transitions in the power sector. - To scale up batteries globally, the report found that costs need to come down further without compromising quality and technology -Global battery manufacturing has more than tripled in the last three years. While China produces most batteries today, the report shows that 40% of announced plans for new battery manufacturing is in advanced economies such as the United States and the European Union. If all those projects are built, those economies would have nearly enough manufacturing to meet their own needs to 2030 on the path to net zero emissions. We urgently need to unlock the bottlenecks to growth. At the same time, mainstreaming sustainability into this rapidly growing industry from the outset is a critical priority: sustainable battery value chains are resilient value chains and the opportunities associated with this growth can contribute meaningfully to making the green transition a just transition. The Global Battery Alliance is the largest multistakeholder organisation committed to a vision of sustainable, responsible and circular battery value chains by 2030. Congratulations to Brent Wanner and Laura Cozzi and team on this fantastic publication 👏 https://lnkd.in/en4gktAK
