Our colleagues and #STEM experts from Umicore Olen and Hoboken have joined forces with the school Githo Nijlen to participate in the #STEMpact track. This initiative by Voka-Vlaams netwerk van ondernemingen challenges teams of industry leaders and schools to work together to create a plan of action that can serve as an example for other schools to take their education of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to a higher level. The 5 teams that submitted the best action plan will get to pitch their idea to a jury of experts on May 29th, in the presence of the Flemish Minister of Education. We believe that the plan we submitted, with the cornerstone being sustainable partnerships between companies and schools, is the way forward to a high-quality STEM education, join us in rooting for our team to win the #STEMpact award!     #UmicoreYoungTalent

Umicore and STL (Societé pour le Traitement du Terril de Lubumbashi) , subsidiary of Gécamines, have signed an exclusive, long-term partnership agreement whereby Umicore will support STL to valorize germanium from the Big Hill tailings site in Lubumbashi, DRC. Umicore will optimize STL’s new processing facility at the site, using its refining and recycling expertise, and in return will get exclusive access to the processed germanium to produce material solutions for high-tech applications while adhering to the strictest ESG standards. Umicore signs renewable electricity PPA with Gasum for its battery materials precursor and refining plant in Finland. This is the second 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Gasum for its site in Kokkola and will provide about 35 GWh of certified renewable electricity per year until 2035. Through this agreement, we proudly continue to expand our reliance on renewable electricity for our production. Last year more than 40% of our global electricity needs came from renewable sources and in Europe this was almost 60% following our #LetsGoForZero ESG ambition to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2035.
