The Global Battery Alliance could not be more excited about today's publication of the International Energy Agency (IEA)'s flagship report on Batteries and Secure Energy Transitions! It was a privilege to participate in the consultations and peer review and we are thrilled to have the spotlight cast on the battery industry as a critical enabler of the energy transition. The report provides a wealth of data and analysis deep-diving on the role of #batteries in the global energy system. Some extremely encouraging highlights from the report: - In less than 15 years, battery costs have fallen by more than 90%, one of the fastest declines ever seen in clean energy technologies. - Today, the energy sector accounts for over 90% of overall battery demand. In 2023 alone, battery deployment in the power sector increased by more than 130% year-on-year, adding a total of 42 gigawatts (GW) to electricity systems around the world. - In the transport sector, batteries have enabled electric car sales to surge from 3 million in 2020 to almost 14 million last year, with further strong growth expected in the coming years While there is much to celebrate, we cannot afford to slow down: - To triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030 in line with COP28 targets, 1 500 GW of battery storage will be required. A shortfall in deploying enough batteries would risk stalling clean energy transitions in the power sector. - To scale up batteries globally, the report found that costs need to come down further without compromising quality and technology -Global battery manufacturing has more than tripled in the last three years. While China produces most batteries today, the report shows that 40% of announced plans for new battery manufacturing is in advanced economies such as the United States and the European Union. If all those projects are built, those economies would have nearly enough manufacturing to meet their own needs to 2030 on the path to net zero emissions. We urgently need to unlock the bottlenecks to growth. At the same time, mainstreaming sustainability into this rapidly growing industry from the outset is a critical priority: sustainable battery value chains are resilient value chains and the opportunities associated with this growth can contribute meaningfully to making the green transition a just transition. The Global Battery Alliance is the largest multistakeholder organisation committed to a vision of sustainable, responsible and circular battery value chains by 2030. Congratulations to Brent Wanner and Laura Cozzi and team on this fantastic publication 👏 https://lnkd.in/en4gktAK

The International Energy Agency (IEA)’s Global EV Outlook 2024 is here and the future is looking electric! 🚗🔋🌎 The transition to EV’s is driving a profound transformation of mobility and the energy system and this transition is not without challenges. However, the benefits are substantial, here is the best one: ‘Under today’s policy settings, the rapid uptake of #EVs – including cars, vans, trucks, buses and 2/3-wheelers – is set to avoid the need for more than 10 million barrels of oil a day in 2035. That's equivalent to all the oil demand from road transport in the United States today.’ The full report and the corresponding data explorers are available here: https://lnkd.in/esAHJyRG
Global electric car sales are set to grow strongly again this year, reaching about 17 million. With more than 1 in 5 cars sold worldwide in 2024 set to be electric, the rise of EVs is transforming the auto industry & the energy sector. Read more from the International Energy Agency (IEA) Energy Agency: https://iea.li/44isGtR Electric cars' growth this year builds on a record-breaking 2023, when sales soared by 35% to almost 14 million. Demand was largely concentrated in China, Europe & the US, but momentum is picking up in key emerging markets such as Viet Nam & Thailand. Explore IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2024: https://iea.li/3QdwEhJ Despite near-term challenges in some countries, new IEA analysis sees the global electric car market gearing up for the next phase of growth. Under today's policy settings, nearly 1 in 3 cars on China's roads by 2030 is set to be electric & almost 1 in 5 in the US & EU. One reason for EVs' bright prospects: Manufacturers have taken huge steps to deliver on government ambitions. This includes major investments in EV and battery production. As a result, global capacity to produce EVs and #batteries is on track to keep up with rising demand. Under today’s policy settings, the rapid uptake of #EVs – including cars, vans, trucks, buses and 2/3-wheelers – is set to avoid the need for more than 10 million barrels of oil a day in 2035. That's equivalent to all the oil demand from road transport in the United States today. It’s important to note that the pace of the EV transition will hinge on their cost. In China, more than 60% of electric cars sold in 2023 were already cheaper than conventional equivalents. Competition & innovation are expected to bring down prices in other major markets. The transition to #ElectricCars is changing the global auto industry, and growing competition is putting downward pressure on prices. Chinese companies accounted for over half of global sales in 2023. In conventional cars, China has a much smaller market share. Making EVs more affordable is vital – as is ensuring that the availability of public charging keeps pace with sales. Last year, public charging point installations were up 40% from 2022. To align with government pledges, charging networks must grow six-fold by 2035. Alongside today’s new report, IEA is releasing 2 detailed interactive tools allowing users to dig deeper into EV trends & policies around the globe. Europe’s largest battery energy storage project gets the green light ‘The project will feature 20 batteries, each with an inverter, 185 medium voltage transformers, five high-voltage transformers with a total capacity of 1,500 MVA, as well as 25,650 square meters of planting zone around the new battery park. GIGA Green Turtle will store the average energy consumption of 330,000 families annually and feed it back into the electricity grid, the developer said.’
