💡🌿 How can digital solutions curb greenhouse gas emissions? The study developed by the European Green Digital Coalition (EGDC) encompasses science-based methods to estimate the net environmental impact of real-life digital solutions across sectors, by looking at both the positive contribution and the direct footprint of a given digital solution. This collaborative effort, validated by an Independent Advisory Board and involving key industry players, is driving sustainability and digital innovation across sectors. It also supports Europe’s twin transition towards climate neutrality and digital leadership. The developed methodology helps measure the net carbon impact of ICT solutions across sectors, such as: energy, transport, construction, manufacturing, agriculture or smart cities. The EU & Japan – a strong partnership as a key to success. On the occasion of the second Digital Partnership Council, the EU & Japan reaffirmed the importance of promoting together their joint values and vision for a digital transformation that puts people at the centre and respects fundamental rights. Both partners also agreed on a list of new deliverables to further cooperate on core digital technologies. Dive into the main takeaways ⤵️ 🔹 The EU & Japan today signed a Memorandum of Cooperation on digital identities and trust services. The Memorandum will create benefits for electronic commerce and business opportunities. Moreover, it will facilitate Data Free Flow with Trust through use cases of the EU Digital Identity Wallet and trust services. 🔹 In the area of microchips, the EU & Japan will set up a team of experts to develop a research programme to implement the Memorandum of Cooperation on Semiconductors. They are also preparing an administrative arrangement to foster exchange of information on public support schemes. 🔹 On AI, the partners aim to enhance cooperation between the EU AI Office & Japan’s AI Safety Institute to continue shaping a trustworthy AI global governance. ⚠️ The new Whistleblower Tools for the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act make it possible for employees and other insiders to help the Commission identify and uncover any harmful practices of Very Large Online Platforms or Search Engines under the DSA, and any violations of the obligations by gatekeepers under the DMA. 🚩 Through these tools, whistleblowers can provide relevant information while remaining anonymous if they wish to. Information can be shared in any of the EU official languages and in any relevant format, from reports or data metrics to internal research and decisions or any relevant circumstances. The European Commission has today decided that Apple's iPadOS should be added to the list of services for which Apple is a gatekeeper under the Digital Markets Act. Apple now has six months to ensure full compliance of its operating system for tablets with the DMA obligations. Last year, the Commission designated Apple as a gatekeeper under the DMA for its operating system iOS, its browser Safari and its App Store. Yet, the market investigation showed that Apple’s iPadOS, despite not meeting the quantitative thresholds laid down in the DMA, constitutes an important gateway for businesses to reach consumers and therefore should be designated as well. 🆕 New designation under the Digital Services Act. Today, Shein is joining the group of Very Large Online Platforms & Search Engines as it meets the user thresholds to fall under stricter DSA obligations. Following today’s designation as a VLOP, Shein will have to comply with the most stringent rules under the DSA within four months of its notification, such as the obligation to adopt specific measures to empower and protect users online, including minors, and duly assess and mitigate any systemic risks stemming from their services. More specifically, these additional obligations include more diligent surveillance of illegal products, enhanced Consumer Protection Measures, as well as more transparency and accountability. 🧬 The study of genomics in Europe contributes to great advancements in medical research and personalised healthcare!   The ambitious project Genome of Europe, co-funded by the Digital Europe Programme, spans across 26 Member States and several other countries. Involving the participation of over 100,000 representative European citizens, it is one of the most comprehensive genomic endeavours ever developed.    In alignment and collaboration with the 1+ Million Genomes initiative and goals, national collections of genomic data will establish a federated genome reference database representative of the European population, readily available for research, healthcare and public health purposes. 🆕 New calls for proposals to boost AI and quantum tech! Today, we launched calls for proposals worth €112 million under Horizon Europe for research and innovation in Artificial Intelligence and quantum technologies. More than a half of the budget will be dedicated to AI, out of which, €50 million will be dedicated to projects to develop new ways of combining data and the expansion of large AI model capabilities. Another €15 million will be invested in developing robust and transparent AI systems. These investments will help develop AI technology that aligns with the AI Act and the human-centric European approach to AI. Moreover, €40 million will be invested to boost research into cutting-edge, world-leading quantum technologies. The remaining budget will be devoted to projects that will support European values and putting people at the centre of the digital transformation, as well as increase the EU’s influence in global ICT standardisation.
