Amazing But...Streaming doesn't work outside of home network...
I should have written this post earlier. Have had the Bolt+ and Bolt Mini for almost a month now. What can I say? The interface is excellent. They both are very fast and intuitive to use. Changing channels smokes Direct TV or cable provider DVR boxes. The search function and ability to setup with Netflix, YouTube and HBO Go is fantastic. Use all of it. The 3 TB mulit recorders is great when you wish to record multiple shows at the same time and still watch TV...Now, with the streaming that they sold me on. It doesn't work outside of your home network. Period. I went back and forth with pretty much the entire 30 person technical crew in Colorado. Great group of people by the way. The issue appears to be some ability for national networks to detect you are 'outside' of your 'home' network and attempting to login into main box at home to stream live TV. Can stream a few local TV stations. Can access HBO movies to. But, can't watch the news or much else. Not real happy about that part. So, when they say hey. You can watch and stream live TV from a hotel across the world or even in you office on a iPad or iPhone. You can't You get a error message saying STREAMING NOT PERMITTED. I guess to pay $15.00 month to TIVO for a monthly subscription vs paying cable provider to rent DVR boxes is a wash.

Fantastic, class-leading DVR once you get past the timely setup, but it's worth it.

Pros:
1) Simply the best interface and experience of any DVR
2) Snappy performance
3) Well curated program info in terms of season and episode numbers
4) Six tuners
5) Great mobile application that allows Slingbox-like streaming and downloading for off-line viewing
6) Integration of major streaming services into searching and OnePass listings
7) Instant commercial skip is awesome (but only works works on major shows)

Cons:
1) $500 is not cheap
2) Long setup of 1 to 2 hours to go through the guided setup (straightforward though)
3) Ridiculous expectation to wait 24 hours after setup/activation for the Tivo to work (see workaround below)
4) Only the most common streaming services available. I hope they add more.
5) No OTA (over-the-air) tuner or capability. If you scrap cable, you will scrap this DVR. Other Tivo's have OTA and cable.

I had the original 14-hour Tivo in 1999 and several since then including DirecTivo versions. The Tivo experience is well worth it. I have used more of the six tuners than I thought and now realize that four (on the regular Bolts) would likely not be enough given I have a Tivo Mini for another room that uses one tuner for live TV.

The integration of Amazon Video, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Netflix, Vudu, and Comcast OnDemand is great. Beyond cross-service searching, it was nice to get a OnePass and see all the streaming shows available mixed with the recorded shows. (You can turn this off and hide services you don't have). I didn't realize it would pull Comcast OnDemand so that was a pleasant surprise. We don't use our Roku 3 or FireTV Stick as much anymore except for streaming channels that Tivo does not have (such as Leo Laporte's TwitTV and Hallmark Channel Everywhere). The Tivo guide info is much better than what comes from the satellite/cable vendors, particularly for tracking season and episode numbers.

Beyond price, my only quibble is the time for setup. As with other Tivo's, it can take an hour or two to go through the guided setup, so I expected that. The setup is easy and most of the time is spent waiting for the Tivo to download and crunch data. But then once I activated and paid, it said online that it was awaiting activation and to check back in 24 hours. What? A $500 device that I have to wait a day or more to use? I called Tivo support and they told me a workaround.

Workaround to not wait 24 hours for activation:
The Tivo agent told me to go into the menus and manually connect to the Tivo Service now. Do this twice in a row and then restart the Tivo. Viola! It worked. However, Tivo must figure out a smoother activation process.

As an aside, I am on Comcast. I switched after over 18 years with DirecTV. After the AT&T purchase, the DirecTV customer service has been abysmal. In contrast, Comcast has answered within seconds every time I have called once I get past the 30 seconds or so of prompting. I had some problems at first related to an old filter on my line so it took a few calls. They got me to advanced support quickly. (This has nothing to do with the Tivo specifically, but since you MUST have cable with the Tivo Bolt + I wanted to share my experience).

The Tivo is another league compared to the DVR options of both Comcast and DirecTV. The Tivo Bolt+ makes TV like a whole new experience. Saturdays I can record/buffer six college football games at once and switch between them quickly.

Finally, from Comcast the CableCard is free and I only need one outlet. So you save on renting a DVR. You also don't pay for additional outlets if you use Tivo Mini's. I also get a $2.50 credit for not having any equipment from Comcast.

I use a Tivo Mini for the other TV which is just like sitting at the main TV except that it only buffers the channel you are currently watching. Denote that Tivo Mini's must be connected via MoCa or Ethernet. However, if a family member is watching live TV on the Tivo Mini, I can "only" watch/buffer five shows on the TIvo Bolt +. As a note, wireless will not work with the Tivo Mini's. The Tivo Mini is a separate product, but most people are researching a whole-home solution so I mention it here.

I have a long story about this product and after 4 returns, I really feel I've gone way beyond what anyone should ever have to endure, So I thought I'd share unfortunate experience as a warning to others.

I am a long time Tivo customer. I've used tivo since the day they came out and have generally loved the product. The only time I have not used a tivo was when AT&T came out with a dish based TV system and DVR called ultimate TV. I think I used this for a year and hated it. It was laggy, it made mistakes on recording shows and was generally aweful software. So I loved Tivo and have two of them in my house.

I decided to buy the bolt because I was wanting to upgrade my TV to 4k. So the day I got the bolt and put my cable card in and fired it up I was pretty excited. I think this was the happiest day I had in over two years with this product.

So after setting up a couple shows and watching tv I noticed that it would get random bursts noise in the video. Little burst like when you watch a video the bits are not all there this would happen randomly maybe every couple minutes. It was VERY irritating and not acceptable. I called support and they had me do a bunch of things. In the end they said my Signal to Noise ratio was too high. As an old electrical engineer this didn't make much sense but hey what can you do. So they said the problem was with my cable and I needed to get an attenuator. So I called the cable company and they said everything tested fine, they would have to send a tech on site to test the signal in my house. They came out and tested it and said it was ok, I had them go through everything and showed them the tivo diagnostics showing signal errors. So long short they replaced the box on the side of my house, the cable in my attic going to my tv, and played with a bunch of splitters, said some boxes have issues because fios signal is 'hot'. Finally after playing with attenuators and splitters and a lot of trial and error, the problem was pretty rare but still happening. I went back and forth on it for a bit and obviously spent a fair amount of money getting services done. I wasn't happy but it was tolerable and I used it like that for 6-7 months.

I'm not sure what prompted it but I ended up calling TiVo about something else, namely my bill. They were charging my CC for services on the old tivo I replaced and canceled when I set this up. Needless to say I wasn't happy and also unloaded on the noise issue. Finally they credited me some money and said they would replace my tivo.

At this point I do want to say that the Tivo support people were generally great, it was not had to get hold of support and the queue times were pretty quick. They tried to help me within the limits of what they could do and I was not pleasant to talk to at times.

I hooked up the replacement and the picture was perfect. Everything seemed great. Then I found that the apps didn't work except for vudu. Looking it up online it was a common problem. I called tivo like 3-4 times and each time they were escalating it and said in a week or two it would just start working. I would receive email that they reset something and the problem would go away with the next update. Unfortunately it didn't.

Support then said we will send you a replacement tivo. BTW unless you pay extra they will not send you the replacement until you send back your old one first so each exchange I paid extra money for the exchange and one time expedited shipping. Ok so I get a new tivo bolt hook it up and the apps are good but it is complaining my cable card is bad. finally after replacing it two time and having the cable people on site messing with my cable and testing signals I gave up. I had an old tivo pulled it out and tried the cable card fine. So frustrating as I was on with both cable company and tivo for a couple weeks going back and forth on this and made 2 hour and a half trips to replace the cards.

So the tivo people say ok lets replace it again. I say I want a new on not refurbished one. They say they can't do that, I respond that this is the last time so do whatever it takes to test it and make sure it is perfect. So this one comes in and low and behold everything works. Perfect noise free video, no errors in diagnostics, all the apps run properly and I am breathing a sigh of relief thinking this 1+ year trial is over. For 3 weeks I load all the one passes start recording shows and am very happy.

Well today it died. No lights no nothing. I went to best buy and bought a new power supply. Nothing. Tested the outlet it is good. I just got off the phone and canceled my tivo service on both boxes.

So I wish this worked. I love the tivo software and the specs and what this box does when it works. But it appears to me that the bolt hardware must be very cheap and tivo quality has degraded. No way you can have 4 boxes that all fail in different ways as random chance unless the hardware is poor. So this is a warning to anyone looking at this product. I think tivo is in financial trouble and this is just the cracks beginning to show. Sad to see what was once a great product fall to this state esp when there is no real competition in the niche.
