So you consider the Magic Bands trackers while I look at them as convenient way to let me into the park, my room, and even to buy merchandise without the need to take my credit card into the park. Fast passes are free.
MagicBands were implemented not to provide convenience to customers (though that's how they're sold) but to
1. track purchases by individual (if it all goes on 1 card, Disney doesn't know the preferences of each individual in the family)
2. track your location throughout the resort
3. reduce ticket fraud
4. influence crowd control (due to limited attraction availability)
5. put in place a system to potentially charge for fast passes in the future (has been hinted at by insiders they'll be used as perks for booking bigger packages, higher end properties, etc)
#4 and #5 are what's troubling and are a response to a lack of scaling the parks with attendance. With other amusement parks charging for fast passes Disney no doubt sees it as a huge source of potential revenue. Currently every child, for the most part, gets an equal experience; instead they'd be even more divided into the haves and have nots. Families that can afford it can buy their way to the front of the line, while those who can't will spend many additional hours sitting at the back of the bus. I mean, standing in line.
It's already half way there. Resort guests get the Magic Hour and the extra 30 days in advance to reserve their FastPass+ selections. More affluent guests can book VIP tours for expedited admission to all major attractions, and you can get reserved spots for parade viewing (these days all the good sidewalk spots have been identified and are roped off).
I can afford to do these things but I don't think I could do it and look into the faces of poorer families who stood in line for hours; who worked hard just to bring their kids for one day and can't even visit half the attractions because the queue times are so out of control. A magical place for me is one where all families are treated equally, at least for the day. I mean, they charge enough for it.
Regardless, the roll out of MyMagic+ has been a billion dollar with a B clusterf**k by any objective measure; plagued by bugs, system crashes, enormous cost overruns, missed deadlines, and many, many frustrated guests. From this comes the shelving of several high profile projects at the company.
Ack sorry for the rant. I type too fast.
tl;dr: MyMagic+ is Iger's Antennagate x 100.
