Apple Now Awarding Up to 350 WWDC Scholarships for Students

Apple will award up to 350 students and developers belonging to select STEM organizations that promote diversity with scholarships to attend its recently announced Worldwide Developers Conference next June 8 to 12 in San Francisco, as spotted by Re/code. The company previously limited WWDC scholarships to 200 students and developers at past conferences, and is raising that limit in an effort to promote diversity within the developer community.

WWDC scholarships are available to students aged 13 or older and members of participating organizations around the world that promote science, technology, engineering and math education for young women and other ethnic groups. Apple awards selected students with a free WWDC ticket, normally $1,599, and may cover travel and accommodation costs at its discretion. All other expenses incurred during the trip must be covered by the student.

WWDC scholarship submissions, including a Mac or iOS app, can be made April 22 at 10:00 AM PDT through April 26 at 5:00 PM PDT, and all applicants will be notified about their selection status by May 8. Apple specifies that developers between 13-17 years of age must have their submission completed by their parent or guardian. So, if you are like the people in the picture - you are not welcome. White and Asians, no matter what their financial background, no matter what their aptitude, test scores or accomplishments do not "deserve" any help.

However, in the interest in "fairness" if your skin is of a different color, or you have different plumbing, you will get help, without regard to your aptitude, test scores or accomplishments, because, based solely upon your skin color and gender - you do "deserve" help.

This is one of the benefits of living in a "color-blind" and gender-free society - we judge the results of a race not by opportunities to compete in life, but by who crosses the finish line first, second or third.

Apparently hard work, determination, and perseverance are outdated models. The winners will be picked based upon criteria that are outside the individual's control.

You are absolutely right. If you look at all like those three students in the picture... Apple is not interested in you. Of course, they will need them, after the AA-scholarship recipients don't work out and they need someone to design their new hardware. And they'll just promote the AA-recipients to management so that they don't need any technical proficiency.

See? Now everyone ends up with a job and we don't have to worry about little things like merit.

Yep, you know it. But it wouldn't be political or a "social issue" except Apple made it that way.

I have an idea for Apple. Stay out of politics. Worry about your business. Quit meddling in society and start improving the new MacBook and Watch, rather than caring about people's gender and race so much. I don't care about their race or gender, I just want better products.

You beat me to it. I was going to comment the exact same thing. I am a white college student majoring in IT and Comp Sci, and am just as interested in honing my coding skills, yet because there's already a crap ton of my kind doing the same thing, I get jipped. Sounds about right.

I'm not saying STEM belongs to white, male Americans, but the pendulum of political correctness has swung so far the other way that now there almost seems to be a reverse racism and exclusionary practice at play here. I am a strong advocate for STEM to be accepting of all, especially women, but this is getting a little out of hand.

It couldn't be more opposite of everything you just claimed. Silicon Valley is probably the most open region with the most open professions in the world. Perhaps a little too open as I have mentioned in my first comment. And yeah as another poster already pointed out, you can't use that last bit of your argument without sources, even if you are just exaggerating.

I thought Tim Cook was against businesses being able to discriminate against someone based on their innate personal characteristics (sexual orientation, race, gender, etc.). Isn't gving or withholding favors based on such characteristics just as offensive as denying services to someone on this basis (e.g., not catering food for a gay wedding reception)?

It's racist to employ people based on colour. All these Californian companies employ people that will make them the most money. They are too focused nonprofits to care about skin for heavens sake.

While I think too that modern liberals are some of the quickest to cause others of racism and prejudice when they don't completely agree with them on something, I feel your concern here is unfounded.

Software engineering has virtually no female people in it either. I'm a Computer science student and there are about 4 women in my class of 120! Does that mean women are worse programmers? No, or course not. But it doesn't mean there should be silly quotas that ignore talented males for the sake of 'fairness'. The Irish government here has gender quotas now and I think it is actually not a good thing for women and the feminist movement. It makes them look like they couldn't get into power alone, and they need extra help. How condescending. From Catherine the Great to Angela Merkel, women are well proven to be strong competent leaders. No committee needs to hold their hand.
