Apple Music for Android Surpasses 10 Million Downloads

Apple Music for Android today surpassed 10 million downloads on the Google Play store, nearly ten months after it was released on the platform. Specifically, the app's total number of installs is now between 10 million and 50 million, up from between 5 million and 10 million, as of some point in the past day.

Apple Music expanded to Android in November 2015, around four months after the streaming music service debuted on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The app, which is no longer in beta as of August, has a similar design and features as its iOS 9 counterpart, including the same three-month trial and prices.

Apple's streaming music service had 15 million paying subscribers as of WWDC 2016 in June. Industry leader Spotify, by comparison, had 30 million paying subscribers at around the same time period. On iOS 10, Apple has completely revamped the app with improved organization and a new design centered upon bold, large text.

Apple Music for Android is available as a free download on Google Play for devices running Android 4.3 or later.

I'd like to think that's when Apple updates all of its apps.

iOS release days are usually known for

1. Everything updates. EVERYTHING (I remember when iOS 7 came out I had 12 apps to update in a span of an hour)
2. Apple is usually good at updating its apps so most likely it's Android apps as well
3. Also if you are using college wifi and somebody catches wind that theres an iOS update out. Well r.i.p any productivity you want to get done. ButThatsJustMe

I have tried Google Music because of the fact that you get YouTube Red as part of the deal, but Google is just crap when it comes to the music service. I even did the 4 months free deal, trying to get use to it, but I just don't like the IOS app at all. The sad news is it isn't much better on Android.

Apple now with the annual $99 music card, puts the service at about $8.25 per month or 2 months free. If you switch to Apple Music and do the 90 days free, you basically end up with 15 months of music for $99. Not Bad!

I have actually used the Apple App on Android and I found it worked pretty smooth. If I was running Android I could certainly deal with it over Google Music.

I believe it was when iOS 6 came out - it was a major major update (maybe I'm thinking iPhone OS 3 or 4?) but it bogged down the school network so much with everyone downloading the new OS that the school put a block on any traffic related to Apple's servers.

Which meant no iTunes downloads, no App Store downloads, couldn't even load anything store related. I can't recall if iMessage was affected (or even available at the time), but I remember it being a huge pain being at school and having my device get hung up trying to access Apple! It works now thank goodness.

Here's hoping this doesn't happen again...

I expect most will download it and find out its.... meh...

I have owned every iPhone since the 1st one and also have various Macs. Couldn't care less about Apple Music.

Didn't work at all for my girlfriends phone. Even want to an Apple Store and the genius at the Genius Bar couldn't get it done either.

Found a 3rd party app that did it - which funny enough is by the same company Apple licensed the move to iOS app from.

I have several Android devices, and Apple Music won't work on any of them. It seems it only works on phones, not tablets. Shame, considering the number of Android tablets out there. Another major oversight from Apple.

How do people even manage to use AM on Android phones? It's the buggiest app I've ever seen. Out of those 10 million downloads three are mine, because I tried it on two phones and deleted and reinstalled once to see if maybe that is the problem. It even crashed before I finished entering my login.

Honestly, it really shouldn't. When you remove the very loud, very vocal minority of fanboy ratings, the app's true appeal materializes. Those fanboys include the Android idiots who would give the app a 1 just because, and the Apple jackwagons who would give it a 5 cuz reasons. Both factions are useless and serve no purpose worth noting. The 3.3 rating is fair imo. It's decent, not great. I chose Play Music family because it has a better bang for the buck with Youtube Red and the ability to run through a web app <-- Apple Music really should have had this already.

Meaning Amazon Fire HD (maybe that's not the correct name)? Don't they have their own App Store that doesn't allow competing products? Other than the Amazon Android tablets I was under the impression that Android was a minority of tablets; minuscule when you remove those that are deployed in commercial settings (e.g. servers in restaurants and industrial applications etc...).

How will Apple survive trying to compete in an environment that is completely controlled by a ginormous international conglomerate and demands payment in perpetuity for every subscription they sell through the giant's monopolistic medium.

I used Play Music for over a year when Apple Music first came out I did not try it until earlier this year. At first Apple Music app for Android was terrible. It crashed all the time and it would frequently just pause what I was listening too. I did cancel it for a while and went back to Play Music only when the app got more stable I stayed with Apple Music.

Although Play Music has a big library of music Apple Music has some albums that Play Music did not have. Also Play Music has zero parental controls. I know they have a block explicit button but it does not work and it is as useless as there so called Safesearch which is 0% effective in blocking adult content. On Apple Music it actually grays out explicit tracks and albums but Play Music lets you play them no matter what.

Also Play Music shows explicit titles four letter explicit words as I once went into the new music section and it was not a pleasant experience. Apple Music censors those offensive words. This is why I did not search much for music on Play Music example search for CeCe Peninston would first search for CeLo F you but on apple music it is F**k you but on Play Music well I won't type it but you know.

Then there YouTube Red is not worth it either. I don't mind dealing with a occasion ad most I can skip as most what I watch on YouTube are just tech and unboxing videos. Not worth $10 a month when they promised exclusive content hoping it would be licensed TV shows instead just lame YouTube stars doing stupid things as usual.

Joke or not, but Google allows the app to let users sign up for a subscription with external billing (in this case through iTunes). So they actually do not "demand payment" like Apple does e.g. from Spotify in this case ...
