Especially if that product happens to be your flagship device and it literally catches on fire.

No doubt the repercussions of this will continue to hurt Samsung for some time to come.

Correct. It should be a lesson for everyone, not excluding Apple. All it takes is one product, and a chunk of marketshare is lost. Just like that.

But let's be fair, 20% still isn't a bad market share.

Right. At a time when Android market has some really good premium phones at much less price, Samsung's marketshare is laudable.

The latest data from market research firm IDC shows Samsung's share of the worldwide smartphone market dropped to 20% in the third quarter -- its lowest market share since recording 19.9% in the fourth quarter of 2014. IDC estimates Samsung shipped 72.5 million smartphones in the quarter, down 13.5% compared to the estimated 83.8 million smartphones it shipped in the year-ago period.

galaxy-note7-hands-on.jpg

The decline can be at least partially attributed to Samsung's disastrous Galaxy Note7 recall in early September, although the impact of that move on the third quarter was limited to only a few weeks. Samsung's market share and financial results will likely suffer more greatly in the fourth quarter as the recall and subsequent discontinuation of the Galaxy Note7 weigh on the entire three-month period.

idc-q3-2016-smartphones.jpg

Apple finished runner-up to Samsung as usual with 45.5 million iPhones sold, down 5.3% versus the 48 million iPhones it sold in the same quarter last year. Apple's worldwide market share was 12.5%, down slightly from 13.4% in the year-ago quarter. Samsung's Galaxy Note7 recall could further boost sales of the already-popular iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus heading into the holiday shopping season.Chinese smartphone manufacturers Huawei, OPPO, and Vivo rounded out the top five vendors in the third quarter with 9.3%, 7%, and 5.8% market share respectively. Huawei in particular came within striking distance of Apple with an estimated 33.6 million Android-based handsets shipped in the quarter, including the flagship Huawei P9, representing 23% year-over-year growth.

The possibility of Chinese brands ever surpassing Apple or Samsung in smartphone shipments will greatly depend on their ability to enter the U.S. and European markets, where their presence is currently limited. All smartphone makers also have to deal with an increasingly saturated market that saw only 1% growth in the third quarter. Overall shipments rose totaled an estimated 359.3 million units.

[doublepost=1477552040][/doublepost]Isn't the last sentence supposed to read:
"Overall shipments rose totaled an estimated 362.9 million units," instead of 359.3 million units?

Kinda obvious. This is worldwide data, so the numbers would be highly affected by China. In China, Oppo is number one. Not only that, Vivo is part of Oppo, and both of them are growing. Samsung is not doing too well in China.

Looks like the weird Chinese brands have taken market share from both Apple and Samsung.

To all the Samsung haters, just remember that competition is a good thing, and there will be a "next time" at some time, and it might hit closer to home.
Competition is generally good but not good in every way. I'm sick of Google trying to make their stuff incompatible with Safari, OS X, and iOS. Also, it's bad when the competition just rips off products from innovators; it sets a bad precedent.

Samsung problem was pushing a faulty device to market, apple problem was milking a device three years running. Samsung issues will continue into next year, they took a brand trust hit.

At the end the consumer is the looser and voting with their wallets. It's actually a great time for a competitor to bring a great product to market . Ironically it's Microsoft that is slowly innovating behind the scenes, shows what a good CEO can do.

Wait.....but apple have been doing that for years , it's the most closed ecosystem.

And who is actually innovating ? Cause I see all the major operating systems stealing each other's ideas. Android and iOS have been copying each other for years....or they are stealing the ideas from smaller companies which they just purchase .

Look at Siri , all started off as an independent company and and everyone had ripped them off. This is the majority of innovation recently.

In short, Samsung will rebound and consumers will won't abandon them. Samsung will bring a game changer Phone that will be successful.

Damage is done.
Damage is done. To the Samsung brand. Internal email revealed they ignored numerous safety concerns and refused to recall the product and couldn't successfully fix the problem, replacing phones twice with not properly tested new designs. Just imagine a store employee trying to convince a mother of a newborn that no this specific phone he's selling her wasn't the model of Samsung that kept exploding. I think she's going to play it safe and choose any brand but this grenade producer. When you don't want your child to be set on fire you can never be too sure.

For the above statement? I would be interested in reading your claim.

We need competition, it pushes things forward I have seen it many times. We need a 3rd key player here along with Samsung and Apple.

Not my claim. It was a story on MacRumors a few weeks back. I searched but cannot find it. Point is they are dishonest and incompetent and their brand will suffer. I'm recommending against their products now telling anyone in the market for an Android to choose any other brand.

I agree. I'm Pro Apple and always have been. Samsung will have scar tissue for life, but as long as competition exists coupled with advances Apple doesn't incorporate into their iPhones, Samsung Phones will appeal to a certain demographic.

So what's Apple's excuse for declining market share, given that they don't have exploding phones and should be benefitting from their competitor's errors?

Apple's phones are very expensive and they only make one new phone: iPhone. They are still selling at a minimum 200M phones per year addressing really only the high-end of the market. The iPhone 7 is looking to be a hit and iPhone 8 should sell very well considering the rumours. They are still by far the most profitable.

And the A11 Chip is rumored to be a huge leap from the A10 Fusion with the iPhone 8.

220 units exploded among 1.59 million Note 7 (original model).
119 units exploded among 1.47 million Note 7 safe (recalled model), Samsung said today.

It's not so much that they could have burned down 220 people's homes and planes, but that they were too incompetent to rectify the issue and handle the problem, continually selling this dangerous product and unfixed versions of it.

No sales (Note 7), But Apple's profits tumbled 19% its third quarter of falling iPhone sales in a row.

Apple seeing no benefit from Galaxy Note 7 fires -http://www.slashgear.com/apple-seeing-no-benefit-from.../

Puleeeeze.

Apple just guided for a **record** Q1 2017, which means they'll be selling more iPhones than ever, at higher ASPs.

Not only that: all iPhone models are backordered, and the Plus nodels will remain backordered well beyond the end of the quarter.

Very good news. I'd prefer Samsung would left mobile phone market at all and focused on spare parts: displays, flash and SSD drives.
