Apple Shares Two New Tutorials for Memories Feature in Photos App

Since May, Apple has been sharing a series of iPhone 7 photography tutorial videos both on a dedicated photography how-to website and its YouTube channel, and today, there are two new tutorial videos, this time featuring the Memories function in Photos.

The two new videos walk users through customizing Memories in the Photos app and then sharing Memories on social networks. Each video is 40 seconds in length and includes quick step-by-step visual instructions.

Apple first started highlighting the Memories feature in both a full-length iPhone 7 ad and its first Memories tutorial video, both of which were released yesterday.

Many of Apple's photography tutorials are simple and are aimed at users who are not familiar with the photo taking capabilities of their iPhones. Topics covered include how to shoot a close-up, how to shoot a vertical panorama, how to shoot a selfie with a timer, and how to shoot without a flash. Some also include general photography tips and cover topics like portraits, unique angles, street light, action, and more.

You can choose your photos. You can make memories out of albums. Put whatever photos you want in an album. Perhaps you should watch the How To videos.

When the iPhone Memories function came out, I was really surprised at how well it worked. I occasionally house-sit for some friends and feed their cats. I occasionally took cat pics over 2 or 3 years. They were all geotagged to the same location, so Memories made a little album. I exported the animated video it made almost untouched (I took out one photo that was off center) and played it for them. It almost brought them to tears.

I've been a Google Photo user since it was Picasa, and I don't see how Google Photos is so up there that Apple cannot compete with them. The only thing people like about Google Photos is that Google giving "unlimited" storage by recompressing your photos to smaller sizes.

Me too, I also love the fact I don't have to store my photos on my phone as they are fully stored in the cloud.

Would be better if they offered a deal like Flickr (1tb no compression). To be fair, Google's compression is unnoticeable for non photographers.

won't it still be there, just the onus is on facebook to reimplement it through a share sheet? much the same as sharing to any other app

Choosing photos and how they are displayed is kind of painful with Memories. I have used a few other apps (Splice, is the one I used for my kids birthday) and it was a lot more customization-friendly.

But the convenience of Memories is quite fantastic, I will give you that. Even the end product is almost always pretty great. I suppose the primary use case is supposed to be to make a correlated album with a few clicks without any specific requirement of a photo being animated or cropped in a certain way. For that, the feature is great!

THen people wanted all sorts of features. Because Android had them.

Also, you don't really need these tutorials if you aren't going to use the feature. You can click away as many pictures as you want without ever needing to go through the tutorial

I'm a very biased apple fanboy, but I have to say that Google Photos offers a better service than Apple's... The people and object recognition system is more rock solid, I understand it's done online but I don't care much about privacy when it comes to family photos. We're not very important, and I don't upload papers or my artworks on it.

I did watch the tutorials. That's what prompted me to look at the feature for the first time.

The "Free" option for Google photos only compresses photos over 16MP and then only down to 16MP. Not sure about you but my iPhone 7 only has a 12MP camera so nothing is getting compressed. My DSLR (older) is only 12MP as well.

I would ditch Google photos yesterday if Apple gave us unlimited Photo storage. Or gave us a decent family price for iCloud storage, like I get with Office 365 Home, $99 for 5 people, each gets 1TB of OneDrive plus Office 2016. The same thing would cost me $500 for my family.

Agreed Google Photos is fantastic. It is fast and super simple to use/share. I also do not keep any documents on Google cloud or even use their email. I keep my doc's one One Drive which works great with Apple products.

memories are great. but the iOS version of photos lacks some features which are useful for this function. these are smart albums, tagging and keywording (incl staring).

Agree completely!!!! I've been an iPhone user since the original and an iPad user since the iPad 2 and I never felt like I needed to read a manual until around iOS 7. I didn't give in and actually download them and read them until iOS 8. I say "them" because Apple puts out device specific iOS manuals for the iPhone and iPad in the iBook store for each release of iOS.

There are simply too many features built into iOS for everything to be intuitive anymore. I do miss the old days but if Apple wasn't adding these features into iOS then they'd be bleeding market share.

So all you folks who insist you can choose what pictures to use, how do you do it? I'm not talking about choosing the best from what Memories has already gathered, but creating a new, more meaningful Memories.

For example, Memories created an album in my photos called "on the water." Great. But there are only photos from one of four cruises. There are lots of pics of water in my photos. So how can I add pics from those other cruises?
