What most people don’t know is that Apple will give you a refund for unused AppleCare+. Say you only use it for a year, if you keep your receipt, Apple will give you a store credit for the pro-rated amount remaining to spend as you like. I use it every year to buy my accessories for my next iPhone, Apple Watch, or MacBook
How much of a refund? If I buy the coverage for $200 and get a refund next year (and I don't use any of the accidental damage coverage), how much money would I get back?

Does standard warranty apply outside home country for iPhones? Is apple care reqd for fixing warranty issues in a foreign country?

For the iPhone 7 my daughter's use, they have managed to break them twice during the past year. They pay the AppleCare repair cost and I pay for AppleCare. It has been a good value for me.

Yes they have good cases and screen protectors. They still manage to break the screens in the oddest ways (hit by the seat belt, dropped a gram weight on the screen, etc.).

i don’t care and i’m sure half of the people didn’t want it either but i get that screen replacement is expensive but back glass is even more wtfff
The vast majority of iPhone users end up putting their phone in a case, so the odds of them breaking the back is pretty slim.

If you want wireless charging, you need a glass back.

No, I believe a plastic back will work with wireless charging, and phones should be made out of high quality plastic that won't shatter or dent. Not sure when these companies will finally understand that.

As for the value of the plan, I went with SquareTrade this round and will see how that works out.

In the EU Apple Care has little to no use since EU consumer protection laws are quite good. Furthermore, in the case one might damage ones screen, might as well repair it and spend as much as Apple Care +the fee.
Agreed. consumer law in the UK covers hardware defects for 6 years from date of delivery as long as the Apple product is directly bought from Apple, I believe. Therefore unless you require accidental damage, it is definitely not worth buying. They'll even replace you battery for free if it holds less than 80% charge, as long as it's still within the consumer law's 6 year period.

Everybody always thinks insurance is a ripoff... until they are in the Apple store whining about the cost of their shattered phone. I agree a case is a must-have investment with these phones that are about as easy to hold as a wet fish. Gorgeous, but yet another example of Jon Ive's slow descent into the dark side of putting form WAY above function in recent years (the MacPro trash can has left Apple's former dominance of the high-end creative Professional market a bloodied carcass).

I’m more concerned with losing my phone somehow or it being stolen more than cracking the glass. For this, AppleCare+ is worthless and I’m much happier with Total Mobile Protection from Verizon which does cover the device if it’s lost or stolen. Big difference between the two coverages. Plus, I can pay $11/month for TMP versus having to pay the $199 upfront with AC+, allowing me to keep more cash liquid.
But Asurion replacements are refurbished by Asurion.. not Apple... and they do a piss poor job of it. I used to work for Asurion. Let’s just say that I’ve had customers call to complain about their replacements and have seen people get their phone replaced 5 times because of problems with their replacements. I am pretty sure they are not using genuine parts from Apple either.

Another thing people don't know: Apple phone support is free, and has been for at least a year. You no longer need AppleCare to get out-of-warranty support.

Don't believe it? Try calling Apple Support on an out-of-warranty Apple product. They'll still help you, and for free.

While the Screen could be a problem
It’s really the back that’s costly to fix

I don’t think an all glass back wii sustain much of a drop. Let’s wait for the drop tests to get a better idea
If you plan on keeping the phone more than a year. It makes sense

I don't buy extended warranties for anything. Thankfully I'm wealthy enough to self insure. Extended warranties are nearly pure profit as they hardly get used. They're nearly worthless for cars too with all the strings attached and high premium or deductible. It was mentioned but most people don't realize their credit card adds 12-24 months of additional warranty. I've use this a number of time and never had an issue with it.

Its another disgusting thing that Apple does that I (like the good sheep I am) pay for every time I get a new iPhone.

Ive said it once, ill say it again: AppleCare+ should be free for all products as a way of Apple giving back to the public that have made it an almost trillion dollar company.

Apples Greed is absolutely boundless. Im still shaking my head that X doesnt come with airpower in the box!

I don't believe the article mentioned it but the increasing cost of these phones is another reason why the Apple Upgrade program deserves a second look, even if you don't swap out phones every year. It comes with Apple Care+ and the "loan" is 0% financing. It's a bit like the advantage of leasing a car vs. buying (except much better) if you are somebody who doesn't plan on keeping it for years and years.
