iTunes Not Coming to Microsoft's Windows Store in 2017

At its Build developer event earlier this year, Microsoft said Apple was planning to bring its iTunes app to the Windows 10 store, making it easier for Windows users to find the software.

At the time, Microsoft said the app would be available in the Windows Store "by the end of this year," a deadline Apple now says it's not going to be able to make.

"We have been working with Microsoft to deliver the full iTunes experience to our customers and we need a little more time to get it right," an Apple spokesperson told ZDNet.

Both companies are still working to get iTunes into the Windows Store, according to ZDNet's sources, but there is no updated timeline on when it might be available. Apple also did not provide details on why it's taking so long to wrap up the transition to the Windows Store.

Most Windows users can download the iTunes software outside of the Windows Store, but Windows 10 S users will need to do without iTunes for the time being as that's a version of Windows that can only run apps available in the Microsoft Store.

I don't understand why iTunes doesn't have a web app/player... Netflix, Hulu, Spotify etc. all work in most browsers, why can't iTunes?

Excellent point. You would think the main app that most Windows users who already own an iPhone would be exposed to on the daily basis would be polished to perfection. After all, what better way to say "Mac is better" than to deliver the best music app on the competing system!

Huh? This has to do with MS releasing a version of Windows that only works with their store. I wouldn't put it "all" on Apple.

1. Does the current marketshare of MacOS really amount to "competing" with Windows?

2. Wouldn't it behoove them to have their software easily available on ANY platform if they intend to squash competitors such as Spotify, Tidal, etc?

3. iMessage on Android would be freakin' sweet.

You do realize that a majority of iPhone owners are Windows users. Would be nice to have a stable application to reset their phones once Apple releases their next buggy software and bricks theirs phone.

If this is a full rewrite of iTunes for UWP I'll understand the delays and I'll be absolutely thrilled when it comes out. If it's just Desktop Bridge on the garbage iTunes for Windows that exists now then this shouldn't be taking so long (and I really don't care anyway).

I doubt Apple could write a version of iTunes that complied with regulations third party developers have to follow for the Mac App Store, either.

I think Microsoft just announced they're letting go of Grove or Groove so technically they don't have a music service anymore. This is certainly a big win for both companies as Apple is trying to beat out Spotify in the streaming market and having a savvy desktop app for the world's most popular desktop OS is huge.

I believe it was through the end of the year at least Windows S users could upgrade to full Windows 10 (not sure which version), where you can install what you want, for free. So if you have Windows 10 S, go do that while you still can.

Guessing Microsoft charges PC vendors less for 10 S - as Microsoft can count on getting a 30% cut of all your Windows 10 program purchases going forward...huge benefit - for Microsoft.
