Apple is making its "Carpool Karaoke: The Series" television show available for free via the TV app, according to a new trailer the company shared on its YouTube channel this week (via Billboard).

Free episodes of the show will be available through the TV app starting on May 11 at 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time, giving those who don't have an Apple Music subscription a chance to watch it.

Right now, "Carpool Karaoke: The Series" is limited to Apple Music subscribers who have subscribed to a free trial or who pay the $9.99 per month fee for the service. Starting later today, the series will be available to watch in the TV app on iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV even if you don't have an Apple Music subscription.

Apple plans to release new free episodes of "Carpool Karaoke: The Series" each Friday, so the entire series won't be available at once.

"Carpool Karaoke: The Series" is based on the Carpool Karaoke segment made popular by "The Late Late Show With James Corden." The show pairs up different celebrities, musicians, and athletes, putting them in a car together to sing popular songs.

Apple has released 19 episodes of "Carpool Karaoke" thus far, and the show was approved for a second season back in February.

The article is wrong, you can watch apple music content in the tv app from the start. It just wasn’t free. You do not have to watch it from the Apple Music app.

Hmm, when I try this, the TV app transfers me to the Music app. It does not let me watch it directly in the TV app, even though I'm an Apple Music subscriber.

Edit: This is what I see.

Edit two: Looks like for the free episodes you *can* watch them in the TV app, but for the non-free ones that are still only available to Apple Music subscribers, you have to watch in the Music app. I've updated the post to make it clear these are available to watch in the TV app.

I'm expecting the snarky comments of course but this is a good strategy.

Two things:

1. Apple is confirming what was obvious to anyone paying close attention over the last couple of years: the Apple TV App is the video equivalent of the Apple Music app. Apple's TV shows will live here.

2. Certain shows will be free to get people used to using the TV app. Throw away time killers like Carpool Karaoke are the perfect kind of TV show for this. Celebrities are popular, drawing in viewership, and the show is a fun way to kill 30 minutes. But it's not the kind of TV show you get invested in and would pay money to watch.

I'm expecting Apple to leverage third party content to build up the TV App's usefulness and the subscription's value. All TV and Movies in this one app on AppleTV, iPhone, iPad and Mac. An Apple TV subscription would grant you access to all Apple produced TV shows but also to a stable of movies and third party tv shows. Like music, Apple would pay content owners per view. This would replace renting movies on iTunes.

Fresh content from third parties would live in their respective apps but would be accessible from within the TV app as has been circulated recently. Hopefully Netflix joins in, otherwise they're going to start losing influence when every iOS/tvOS/macOS gives more visibility and ease of use to apps that work from within the TV app.

People always yelling at Apple to buy stuff look no further. I’m sure their 100% family friendly original programming will be great stuff.

As usual the haters are embarrassing themselves. CK is an immensely popular show--just on Youtube alone there are millions of views, and the show is so popular they have renewed it for a second season. LOL.

Apple often does app and content giveaways to reward us loyal and faithful customers. But I would say if you don’t have Apple Music you blew it. There’s nothing quite like Apple Music when it comes to putting all the music in the world at your fingertips - coupled with delightful curation and discovery that will rock your mind.
