Hands-On With the OnePlus 6, the Latest Android Phone to Adopt a Notch

OnePlus announced its new flagship phone, the OnePlus 6 on May 16, taking the opportunity to poke fun at Apple for removing the headphone jack from the iPhone while also copying a key Apple design -- the notch.

The OnePlus 6 is the latest Android phone to adopt a notch, so we thought we'd check it out and compare it to the iPhone X in our latest YouTube video.


The new OnePlus 6 features a 6.28-inch AMOLED display with minimal bezels and a small notch at the top. The notch houses the front-facing camera and ambient light sensors, but it is smaller than the notch on the iPhone X because OnePlus, like other Android manufacturers, has not been able to mimic the full TrueDepth camera system from the iPhone X as of yet.

It does, however, have facial recognition capabilities, but 2D, not 3D. 2D facial recognition is less secure than the 3D facial recognition Apple has implemented and cannot replace a fingerprint sensor as a biometric option.

Like the iPhone X, the OnePlus 6 features an all-glass body, with two vertically positioned rear cameras and a fingerprint sensor for security purposes.

Inside, the OnePlus 6 does have some impressive hardware. It uses Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 845 processor and it includes 6 to 8GB of RAM, depending on the storage space, which is 64GB at minimum. Comparatively, Apple's latest iPhone X offers just 3GB RAM, but Apple devices tend to use hardware more efficiently due to the tight integration between hardware and software.

OnePlus continues to offer a headphone jack in the OnePlus 6, but did opt to ship the smartphone alongside the $69 OnePlus Bullets Wireless headphones, the company's answer to the AirPods.

Big assumption there. Not even sure they want to copy the 3d camera.

Next iPhone SHOULD look similar. Get rid of the notch. Its not needed (only did it to differentiate between iPhone/Android) Would much rather have the smooth top bar without the notch thanks Apple.

The notch is smaller and way less intrusive. Option to pull content away from the notch so it looks like a straight line and there's also an option of standard Android on-screen buttons which is better that the X's no buttons at all.

I might just get the 128GB one to replace my 6s but that's also because iOS is starting to annoy me more and more.

They could easily make it all black up there but I feel like the Notch is there just like the AirPods are ugly on purpose. They are easy to spot outside. Free marketing!

One reason for me not to buy 95% of the android phones is the horrible security update regime almost all producers have. 2 years after model introduction (so if you buy a year old model it's just one year left) and the best of them stop supporting. Lots of them never give out any update.
Plus if there is an update it might take easily 6 months before it reaches your phone.

Why is every phone being measured against the iPhone X? From my perspective, this phone seems like it would compete more with the iPhone 8 (Plus).

It's honestly not terrible design. I wouldn't call it nice, no, but it is basically unnoticeable after using the phone for a few minutes. It looks a little silly, but functionally its great.

30-35 million isn't that disappointing?! And with the profits of the X alone apple beats the complete rest of the market.

I don't understand why people find the notch so terrible.

I'd MUCH, MUCH rather have a notch and the additional screen estate than a bar across the top.

Having a bar across the top defeats the whole goal of having an edge-to-edge display. It makes the phone look no different from yesteryear's phones that didn't have edge-to-edge screens. It simply ISN'T edge-to-edge with a bar, it's just a slightly thinner bezel. The notch looks much better in my opinion. I hope Apple sticks with the notch.

I agree. I can't understand anyone actually prefer a phone with that notch. Its, as you say, bad design, and anyone disagreeing is in denial.

It's never REALLY been about the notch. It's those Anti-Notchers and their dogwhistle codewords.
