Microsoft today released an updated version of its Xbox app designed for the iPhone and the iPad, which will allow Xbox users to play their games remotely on their Apple devices using streaming functionality.

Microsoft has been testing this feature for a few weeks, first providing it to Xbox app beta testers back in September. From the app's release notes:
- Set up new consoles and queue games
- Play remotely from your console
- View and share game clips & screenshots
- Party chat with friends across devices

Have a look around the new app. More awesomeness is on the way!
The new Xbox streaming option is different than Microsoft's xCloud service, which is not yet available on Apple's devices due to Apple's restrictions on cloud gaming. xCloud is meant to stream games from Microsoft's servers directly, while the Xbox streaming option requires users to connect their devices to their Xbox consoles.

Microsoft's updated Xbox app is similar to the PS4 Remote Play app that Sony offers on the iPhone and the iPad. Like the Xbox app, Remote Play allows PlayStation users to play their PS4 games over WiFi on an Apple device.

The Xbox app streaming feature works outside of the home, letting Xbox owners access and play their games from the Xbox when not at home. According to the app's release notes, the streaming feature requires an Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S that's activated or in Instant-On mode along with a 5GHz WiFi connection or LTE/5G connection that provides 10Mb/s download speeds.

Any Xbox game installed on a compatible Xbox can be streamed with the exception of backward compatible titles from Xbox 360 or the original Xbox.

The Xbox app can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

A note to the new people, you should connect to a 5GHz network for the best experience. I was lagging quite a bit at first, but then I realized I was on a 2.4 GHz network. After I switched it, I’ve had little to no issues. My only real complaint about the service is that the Xbox button on my Elite controller doesn’t register in the app so I end up having to tap the screen and tap the virtual Xbox button.

Awesome, honestly this works for me as well or better than xcloud.

2 questions
1) any recommended xbox controller/phone mounts ?

2) if playing on the same network as the xbox does it still stream out to a server then back to your phone/ipad or does it stream directly from console to phone?

people will try this for a few hours, realize the how horrible it is, and then ask themselves what’s the big deal about xcloud if local streaming isn’t all that good.

another apple issue people overreact to for no real good reason
It really isn’t that bad. I took my iPad Pro and Xbox controller over to my Uncle’s house for a 5 year olds party. I was playing Gears of War 5 with no issues. I would never play online FPS since the bit of lag and occasional network spikes would make it terrible. Casual single player games are just fine. It’s a nice added feature to the console, even if it’s something that isn’t used all that often.

I really couldn’t care less about xCloud. I have no plans to use that.

This means that you can use the Xbox game pass app to download games from game pass to your Xbox, then stream those games from your Xbox to your iPhone in the Xbox app. So much for Apple’s arbitrary rules ... a to b to c instead of a to c, but still gets the job done

What am I missing? Every game I select just says “launch on console”. How do I okay something on my phone?

I was excited to read this, then realized it's not xCloud. It only allows you to stream games from your Xbox. Still, it's a start.

I wish there was a way to use the full screen. It cuts off the borders and keeps it 16:9. The fonts are way too small to read. I hope they will update the app to let you zoom in.

This is a good start! Now hopefully Apple and Microsoft can reach a deal on bringing XCloud to iOS too.
