If iMessage is a joke, why not just use Telegram and find happiness? If I felt the same way (and I don't) about iMessage that's what I'd be doing.
The issue is converting family and friends over to Telegram. I strictly use Telegram with my gf but the rest of my friends and family use iMessage. I much prefer Telegram, for privacy and features (although iMessage is decent for privacy).

And I have the one annoying friend that refuses to use anything but Messenger even though he uses iPhones…

I do not consider Telegram as social media. I use it primarily as communicator (like text messages and calls) as it is free in cases when my friends are abroad. Social media I hate and do not use them (e.g. Facebook).
That's a fair point. I think it's also accurate to note it has some social features beyond simple messaging.

I tried to move Telegram, but almost everyone, including me, had at least one person in their circle who would not leave WhatsApp. So everyone had to stay in WA and many of us thought that as everyone will still be in WA what would be the point of yet another messaging app.

I do use iMessage with family and some friends. Messenger is dead to me cause I don’t use Facebook.

Telegram is the best.
Use it on the Apple phones, Android, Linux desktop, Windows, macOS. Works well. (I haven't tried video calls to can't comment on that).
Use it also to transfer files to different devices.

How do you transfer files to different devices? Do you have different phone numbers on different devices? Curious..

Aren’t you that “annoying” friend and family member who has decided to use Telegram instead of iMessage? ?

I just wish some Apple exec installs Telegram and sees how the messaging app should function in 2021. iMessage is a joke compared to it. And it is not related to its video capabilities.
This x1000. Seriously, even Apple’s “major update” last year fell pitifully short of the functionality Telegram has had for years.

100% agree. I find Telegram much easier than AirDrop for transferring files, and for messaging it's so much faster and intuitive than iMessage (which feels bloated, slow and just an overall UI nightmare). In terms of usability, I think iChat was vastly superior than Messages but somehow Apple managed to destroy it.
