Sports Scores and Favorite Team Selection Likely Coming to Apple News App

Apple is planning to expand the sports content available in its Apple News app, based on code MacRumors found in the first beta of iOS 15.4. To offer a more tailored news experience, users will be able to select their preferred sports leagues and their favorite teams, with Apple then providing the appropriate news.

Code suggests that it's possible the feature will sync with the team selections feature in the Apple TV app, as there is a "Sync Sports Favorites" mention. The Apple TV app provides up-to-the minute scoring information, and it's looking like Apple will also bring sports scores and highlights directly to the News app.

This functionality would allow sports fans to get a more in-depth overview of upcoming games, game results, and news relevant to their interests. It would also bring Apple News in line with other publications that already allow readers to get news specific to their favorite teams.

As noted by 9to5Mac and confirmed by MacRumors, Apple is developing an internal "SportsKit" framework for iOS and tvOS, which integrates with the Apple TV app, Siri, and Home Screen widgets. SportsKit is likely to tie in with Apple News, with the framework supporting sports features across the TV app, Apple News app, and more.

Apple is aiming to significantly bolster its sports-related content, according to investment firm Wedbush, which could explain the SportsKit content push. In a recent report, Wedbush said that Apple is on an "aggressive hunt" for potential deals that would allow it to broadcast live sports content on its TV+ streaming service as part of a wider effort to boost subscription numbers.

Apple is, for example, rumored to be seriously pursuing a deal with Major League Baseball. Apple is in talks that would see it able to broadcast some MLB games with the next season.

Would be nice if Apple also supported football and made deals with the biggest European competitions.

Not much, but that SportsKit framework article on 9to5 doesn't mention Apple News?
Since the first beta of iOS 15.2 was released in late October for developers, 9to5Mac found references to something called “SportsKit” in the system’s internal files. There aren’t many details about this framework yet, as it’s probably still under development, but we can tell that it’s integrated with the Apple TV app, Siri, and even home screen widgets.

The “SportsKit” home screen widget includes the ability to receive real-time updates of sports matches. Right now, Siri can already show sports scores, so Apple probably wants to expand this interaction to other parts of iOS and tvOS.

This is very nice, always wanted an Apple Sports app, but Sports integrated in News and TV is maybe even better. Hopefully the News app comes to more countries soon…

I agree, I’d like to see the integration. And as a sports fanatic myself, I would find this totally useful. It seems Apple is really starting to get more aggressive with the whole sports sector and working to the likes of broadcasting with other sporting events.

I really like this idea, but I've had to turn off Apple News notifications before because they spoil big sports news. I saw an (Apple News) notification on my partner's iPad a couple of days ago that went into explicit detail about the results of the Australian Open at like 7 am eastern time, which would have completely ruined the event for basically anyone in North America who intended to watch it with any degree of suspense (and who slept). Nice idea but I can guarantee it'll just spoil games for my favorite teams more than anything.
