YouTube today announced that it is increasing the price of the YouTube TV service, with the cost set to go from $65 to $73 starting today. New members will need to pay $73/month for the streaming service starting now, while prices will increase for existing members on April 18.

According to YouTube, the price is increasing because "content costs have risen" and it needs to charge more to "bring you the best possible TV service."

With the price change, YouTube is also dropping the cost of the 4K content add-on. While it used to cost $19.99 per month, it is now $9.99 per month, so those who were subscribed to YouTube TV with the 4K add-on will actually see a small price decrease. YouTube TV with 4K will cost $83 instead of $85.

YouTube TV is a live TV service that has been around since 2017. When it first launched, YouTube TV was priced at $35, so costs have more than doubled over the last six years. YouTube TV allows up to six people in the same household to use the service, and it includes unlimited cloud DVR storage.

There are more than 100 channels available, with add-on subscriptions for premium networks like HBO Max and STARZ.

Don’t think I can blame YTTV entirely for this one. The sports networks are the driver for much higher prices. Contracts they are doing and just expecting us to pay is ridiculous. Sports industry itself is a giant money grab right now. The average consumer who just wants to watch or go to these games in person are getting squeezed hard.

Why would you pay so much for live tv if you can get any streaming service with the same content (movies, tv shows, documentaries, sports) for less? You could literally get Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max et al for far less AND you can watch everything when u want! Without commercial breaks every 2 minutes. I don’t get it

However, I have not watched live tv in years so maybe I am missing out on something great that justifies paying 70+ a month haha

This has more live sports.

It’s actually a great deal if you have a family.

But youtube charges an extra $11/month for their sports package lol

If their ad business is suffering like Facebook's apparently is, then I guess I understand the price boost. I don't like it, but I understand it.

I'm with you. YTTV isn't better than cable because it is cable, just over a different cord.

To me, cord-cutting means moving away from scheduled channel-based programming.

If you want to watch live sports, you have to pay $$$$. That is a big factor. I will pay for one of the "live TV" packages for one month during the NBA playoffs. Also, you are not getting all of the "TV content" with the services you listed. I helped my dad switch from cable to YouTube TV. It is great for him (sports), but mainly for his wife soaps and cooking channels.

Basically all the stuff I watch is on the streaming services that you mentioned (minus sports), but for others they do not cover all of the traditional content. So you are indeed NOT getting the same content. Another example, my dad likes to watch Yellowstone. You can NOT watch current seasons on a purely streaming aka non-live TV service.

I think there's a LARGE percentage of consumers who still watch live tv (sports, news, etc.). The live streaming services make that transition from cutting the (cable) cord easier. And while cost are rising, it's still cheaper than traditional cable.

It was only a matter of time before YTTV raised their price. I'd say its still the "best" of the live streaming services. T-Mobile customers still will get a $10 credit off (this has been adjusted to a bill credit), but it's still not an "outrageous" price...especially comparable to cable tv prices.

Just switched my wife and I to YTTV from Hulu + Live TV earlier this month and got the price increase email this morning. Just my luck, but with Hulu’s increasing DVR issues, I’ll stick with YTTV.

This is the major problem with these services. They start out cheap then eventually price themselves right out of being competitive. We were with the DIRECTV streaming service from the time it started through last year. Our monthly price had risen more than 100%.

We switched over to YouTubeTV...and thankfully are on a promo of $59/mo for a year. It is going to get to the point where, ironically, cable is going to be the cheaper option...

Having tried most of them, I still say it’s worth the price and cheaper than regular cable. It’s the best of the bunch.
I’ve found Hulu Live to work much better - the YT TV app is slow and buggy for me on Apple TV. Plus, you get Hulu, Disney+ and ESPN+ included. However, there are better values out there. Spectrum has a plan where you pick the channels you want (I believe up to 20) which is about half the cost. They don’t market this plan but you can call to inquire/order. I may do this soon.
