Google today announced that it is opening up access to Search Labs, allowing testers to try out its new Search Generative Experience. The AI-powered Search option is limited to those who have signed up to be a part of Google Labs, with Google letting in a small number of people who have joined the Google Labs Waitlist.

AI for search is a feature that Google announced during its I/O developer conference earlier in May.

Google says that AI Search is designed to "take some of the work out of searching," which can make it easier for users to understand new topics, uncover different viewpoints, and "get things done more easily."

Google suggests that AI search can break down complicated searches into smaller parts, offer quick tips for specific questions, and provide background on what should be considered when searching for items to buy.

The addition of generative AI to search is a new concept for Google, and the company says that it will be making "many updates and improvements over time" based on user feedback. Access is limited to those in the U.S. right now, with the Google app or Chrome desktop browser required. Google customers eligible to use Google Labs will receive an email.

Is this all the prequel to Terminator?

This AI stuff is moving fast and it's getting a bit scary.
As an artist, our breed is dying quick. With big companies getting a jump on AI images/design, like Midjourney and Stable Diffusion, they can knock out in minutes to a couple hours what would take me a day or weeks to do.

Even if I were to invest in the hardware and software needed to do it myself, I doubt I could keep up. The love behind it wouldn’t be there like it is when I tune out the world for a day engulfed in a project.

AI images will never have the passion or the emotion that an artist could put into it, but people needing designs for company logos and advertisement aren’t gonna care.

Google is training its AI on the website information that it's scraping.

Whether that's copyright infringement is up to the courts. But it definitely changes the model. In the past, the website would get a hit because the person would click through. With AI powered search, that probably won't be the case anymore. So why would websites allow google to scrape them?

As a reporter, it's going to make deciphering what's a legit photo/video versus AI created even more challenging.

Fake news/misinformation/blackmail etc are about to soar - as it already floods social media - once (not if) AI falls into the wrong hands.

“Google says that AI Search is designed to take some of the work out of searching"

Translated> Google says that AI is designed to take jobs from humans as soon as humanly AI possible.

They’re eager to have something smarter than themselves to gather data, while saving money by firing employees.
Translated : Google AI will be even better at steering you to websites that reflect googles worldview.

I have major TRUST issues with Google. What's Google AI going to do about that?
I have no issues with Google. I have no idea what you mean by "what's google AI going to do about that". I assume you mean what will Google AI do to regain your trust? Please give us an example of what you expect Google AI to do. Thanks

Photoshop has generative images built in since yesterday. AI will be used as a tool by artists mostly and hobbyists. Everyone can pop out a generic portrait in generative images but good and novel stuff takes tons of work and inpainting and outpainting and revisions.

Bottom line I think efficiency will increase but artists who learn these tools will be fine.

On the particular case of logos I tried for a few hours but could not get it to work and might just resort to hiring someone … who is an artist.

Yeah, Barf is not that great of an AI compared to where ChatGPT is at....Good luck to them while they navigate this and laying off people by pulling their credentials without telling them at the same time.

This is correct. Apps have been using it for a minute, I even use the PS Express app for quick edits on photos. So I’m aware the tools exist and that it will benefit users to a degree.

I’m also aware that we aren’t always given the tech of today when huge companies have the funds for the tech of tomorrow, next week and year.

How many customers are gonna turn to the little guy that has to charge more due to the time taken vs a company online that offers a customer to type words in a box, generate images and then browse until he’s happy with the result? Then all they do is buy the format needed and the rights and be done.

This is where I think it becomes more about deep pockets and not the talent of said artist(s).

All in all, I hope you’re right and there’s nothing to worry about.

Don't worry about it: it's really AI, it's just an advanced text creator, we are far away from AI, which would require very advanced quantum computers, to actually mimic a human brain.

Somewhere between 0 and 1
Can I get what I want to find instead of what you think I want to find?

For almost any search query, you first return news articles, most popular website, then after exhaustive scrolling I *may* get what I wanted to find.

Something tells me, AI will make this even worse than it is now. Not better.

Google earned 220 billion in ad revenue last year. Everything they do with AI is to promote their Ad business.

For general questions or learning I go to ChatGPT first and skip 100s of Google ads. How often do we really need to search for a website? Google is panicking.

Funny, I've been doing the same since ChatGPT came out. The only reason I use search engines now is it's marginally easier to type into the search box.

Once OpenAI comes out with a safari extension that plugs into the search bar it's basically all over for search.
