Just after last week's newsletter went out, news broke that
Apple's design chief Jony Ive will be leaving the company to start his own design firm. Apple and Ive will remain partners, however, as Apple will be a "primary client" of Ive's new firm.
In the days following the announcement, there were a number of reports citing sources with knowledge of how things played out in terms of Ive's level of involvement at Apple over the last few years and his ultimate departure.
One report indicated that his
involvement at Apple tapered following the 2015 introduction of the Apple Watch, while another offered some perspective on disagreements between Ive and other executives about whether the Apple Watch should be positioned as a fashion accessory or an extension of the iPhone and claimed that Ive became
"dispirited" by Tim Cook's lack of interest in product development.
Cook
took exception to the latter report, calling it "absurd" and saying the reporting and conclusions "just don't match with reality," without offering specifics on any inaccuracies.
