Blonde highlights toned down on naturally brown with auburn undertoned hair.

Blonde highlights toned down on naturally brown with auburn undertoned hair.
At age 40 I never colored or highlighted my hair until about three months ago when I started to see a few gray hairs here and there. Before they got to noticeable I figured I’d go with some subtle highlights to help hide it. My healthy hair went from a pretty brown with auburn tones to these bright blonde streaks that didn’t look natural. To say the least I hated them. My hair dresser was able to tone them down and I was able to deal with them. Now a few months later they got blonder and more “in your face” once again. I did not want to dye all of my hair because of a few highlights. I searched and searched and decided to try this out since it isn’t permanent. I am so HAPPY I did! I used it this morning and prayed that once I dried my hair that it would help and it did! It definitely toned down the brash blonde color and it seemed to help blend them. Not only that but my hair is super soft and conditioned too! Which is also a plus considering the areas that had been highlighted were noticeably more dry than my hair not highlighted. The pictures are only after pics. I didn’t even think to take before. But trust me! It made a difference. I am interested in seeing how many washes it will truly last. For right now this has turned out to be a great purchase! I ordered the warm brunette shade.

I will start off by saying that I am using this essentially as a no-damage, demi-permanent hair color to stretch out the time between hair dyes. I have naturally very light blonde hair, currently dyed light brown with Loreal Excellence, and am slowly trying to go lighter and lighter because I have utterly fried my hair and want to stop dying it. However, since my natural hair is so light, growing it out would look ridiculous! I used to use the basic (terrible) 'hair-mascara' type cover up, but now cannot find it in stores (probably because nobody is currently allowed to go into salons at the moment and are as desperate as I am), so I tried this product out of sheer desperation.

This is not a be-all end-all solution: it does work VERY well at times, albeit somewhat inconsistently if you are using it for the purpose I am (covering up light hair or grays). It seems to need a chance to build up in the hair, so it has a bit of spotty coverage if I'm using it for the first time after several days, but it is still a seriously good solution given the poor availability of hair dye and root fixes.

As far as use instructions, I found what worked best was getting into the shower, washing my hair as normal, and then leaning out to pat-dry my hair a little before adding the color to the root area (if the hair is too wet, it doesn't seem to work as well). I then work in conditioner for my ends, but do not spread the gloss through the hair. I have been doing this every day to every other day (if doing every day, 3-5 minutes seems to work perfectly, but more like 8-10 if doing it every other day). This has not damaged my hair, even though I have a very sensitive scalp, to the point where I cannot use most scented shampoos or conditioners.

Lastly, I would also like to say that I initially bought the Ash-Brown / Cool-Brunette version, but found the color slightly inferior to the warm version. I am trying to go slightly ashy with my color in preparation for dying my hair blonde, but the ash brown is a VERY cool brown, where the warm brown is more of a pretty milk-chocolate color rather than being vaguely brassy like I feared. Altogether, this is a good product and I definitely recommend it!

Ten years ago, my sister bought me a bottle of John Frieda's temporary color glaze that was for dark brunette's, imagining that it could be used to subtly cover or tint my greying ashe blonde head. She was right. So, I would wash my hair, then apply the color glaze, which would stay on my hair while I showered below the neck; then after about five minutes, I'd rinse out the brunette glaze with whatever conditioner I'd use. Sure enough, that dark glaze was perfect for my blondish hair; tinting the grey so as to tint the grey hairs for a very natural looking ashe blonde. I guess John Frieda heard about it (since I shared my experiences online and to everyone seeking a good alternative to root-exposing permanent hair color), because not long after I started using it differently than the package suggested, the company paused production of the color glazes then relaunched it as a rinse in temporary tinting that recommends a darker hair glaze than one's natural hair. It is a superb product, but it is hard to find. I used to find it at Walgreen's, but now I order it from Amazon, where it's been available. Lastly, though you're advised to wear gloves, I don't, and I'm able to scrub away the color from my hands. I do advise users to avoid getting it on the face and neck, since older girls like me have drier skin that absorbs most anything. Try putting a facial mask or a heavy moisturizer on your face and neck before color glazing your hair, which should help prevent errant face tinting (that looks weird, if not dirty or blotchy.)

Three people at work have stopped me to ask what I do to keep my super-curly hair so shiny - this + DevaCurl products is the answer.

My stylist recommended that I use a color glaze. I'm starting to get some grey hair but I suck at maintaining color and don't want to pay for salon visits every month. I have dark brown hair and use the Warm Brunette - and can definitely see a difference! It doesn't really cover the grey but turns it a little blonder so it looks better, and makes my hair shiny with a little more depth. Not a miracle product but a visible improvement.

I use it in place of conditioner once a week and leave it on for about 10 minutes - this adds a little moisture and seals the cuticle of the hair. It took a few applications before I noticed any difference, but when I stopped using it I definitely could tell my hair was duller and harder to manage, so it's back in my shopping cart now.

Only drawbacks: it doesn't smell great (not terrible but not great), and it's a little heavy since it deposits color on the hair so it won't work for fine hair. Also, if used as directed on the box you won't see any changes to your hair because that's not long enough for it to actually work.

I bought this to add shine to my hair, and tone it a little. I'm trying to go back to a light brown after being blonde, had already dyed my hair back to light brown, but wanted to add the shine and tone back into it, to lift some of the dullness hair box dye gives.... After two weeks of using I'm not really seeing where it does much of a difference.... I see some shine to my hair directly after using but after a couple days that fades away... As for the color, the brown dye I used before is starting to wash out a little because I was blonde before so it's not really keeping the color from fading either... I'm not disappointed, I just wouldn't buy it again, or recommend it considering it doesn't do much of anything
