Abstract
Abstract: This study examines the notion that the relation between immigrants' acculturation strategies and self-esteem is moderated by discrepancies between preferred acculturation strategies and the imputed acceptance by the host community. It is argued that the maintenance of the heritage culture may be beneficial and the participation at the host culture deleterious for a positive self-esteem when there is a discrepancy between the favored acculturation strategy and the imputed acceptance. The authors assume this relation to decrease with a greater fit between the favored strategy and the imputed acceptance. A survey was conducted to test these hypotheses for the case of Eritrean immigrants in Germany. The results provided broad support for the assumptions.
