Thai Aircraft Carrier Assists Southern Relief Efforts

Share
HTMS Chakri Naruebet ("In honour of the Chakri Dynasty"), the flagship of the Royal Thai Navy, has been designated to assist with relief efforts in the newly flooded Southern provinces. The ship serves not only in force projection, but also disaster relief, as well as being the main maritime transportation of the Thai Royal Family.

Sattahip, 3 November 2010, [PDN]: HTMS Chakri Naruebet is to leave the Sattahip Naval Base to render assistance to Thailand’s Southern provinces, the latest region to be hit by flooding. Her Royal Highness Princess Soamsavali has assigned her secretary, Mrs. Somthawin Yung-yu, to help co-ordinate relief efforts, assisted by the Royal Thai Fleet Commissioner, Rear Admiral Saknarin Jarernsuk, Helicopter Carrier Squadron.

The ship under the Rear Admiral’s command will transport 1,000 preservation bags, containing food and medical items that have been donated from Friends in Need Volunteers Foundation, and the Thai Red Cross. Provision has also been made for the Southern Muslims in terms of halal food. Dried food, rice, drinking water, and other necessities have also been donated by businesses in the Pattaya and Sattahip areas, including Nongnuch Gardens, Big C South Pattaya, Thai- Namthip, Sattahip Electricity Authority, Royal Thai Fleet, Channel 3 TV, Channel 9 TV, and others.

“Even though we have had not much time to request donations in this assistance effort with HTMS Chakri Naruebet, several groups of private individuals and offices have sent many useful items to be loaded aboard the ship. The Helicopter Carrier Squadron had kept accounts of the donations and will ensure they are all placed in the victims’ hands,” Rear Admiral Saknarin Jarernsuk told the press.

The Rear Admiral also stated that food provisions for 5 days’ work have been arranged for the 400 troops engaged in the relief efforts. Fist of all, he continued, we will be co-ordinating with Songkhla Provincial officials to try and ascertain the exact locations which needed assisting. However, because they lack a bird’s eye view, as the ship is arriving in the Songkhla Bay, helicopters will fly out to survey the area to provisionally identify the most needy spots.
