Pure Raw Linseed Oil versus Boiled Linseed Oil
Similarities
Both are fantastic options for:
- Protecting and sealing unfinished wood
- Reviving faded, weathered wood
- Sealing wood from water marks and nicks
- Extends and fortifies oil-based paints & stains to offer a beautiful, protective gloss finish
Differences
- Pure Raw Linseed Oil is in it's purest form so it takes a long time to dry, 2-4 hours.
- Boiled Linseed Oil has been formulated to dry faster, 12-18 hours. It's not for use on projects that will be food related such as vegetable gardens, butcher block countertops & cutting boards.
With both Pure Raw and Boiled Linseed Oil: read all precautions, ventilate your work area well, and dispose of application rags immediately after each use in a sealed water-filled metal container to prevent spontaneous combustion & fire.

My personal favorite treatment for weathered wood that will be outside is first clean with SOS pads and dry in the shade if possible for a day. When clean AND dry apply a couple coats the first day (morning and evening), then one coat a day until it doesn't seem to "take" any more. Then let it sit for a week, give it one more coat and when it seems like the right finish give it a top coat with pure Carnuba Wax. One wood with a rough finish, I used a tooth brush and hair dryer to melt it in and clean the excess. My wood handled tools look great and after a few wipes with a clean shop rag or paper towel feel great. If you get it on metal, a light slight rub with Dawn and steel wool (or that left over SOS pad) cleans it off and coat with Ballistol (also non toxic).
Cautions:
#1: Linseed oil soaked rags can spontaneously combust (ie FIRE). READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE CAN! I store my rags in a sealed ziplock bag or other air-tight container, and place them in a metal coffee can and leave outside. Sealed this way, I've never had a problem. Allowed to air dry, they will get warm, if you are going to air dry them, hang them on a clothes line away from anything else. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE CAN!
#2: All linseed oils darken most woods. I'm new at this, but different woods responded differently. Test with scrap wood or the "hidden" side of something before you throw it on something that you have expectations for.
Final thoughts: I'm happy with this brand and am a repeat customer. Linseed oil may or may not be right for your project, but if you don't mind a little longer time for a finish, and want non toxic products when possible, I can STRONGLY recommend this one.

Picture 3: A coffee spoon that I made for my girlfriends parents.
Picture 4 & 5: A cutting board that I made before and after applying linseed oil.
Picture 6: The same cutting board after about half a year of use.

Overall Raw Linseed oil is the best choice - safe, non-toxic and soaks deep into the wood, the only inconvenience to wait 1-2 days for it to dry, but for me, with given pros it is minor.
