    Abstract

This study is directed at determining the influence of cross-linking on the physical properties of a water-based nonstick hydrophobic coating. The extent of cross-linking was determined using FT-IR spectroscopy and correlated with important surface properties of the coatings:  surface hydrophobicity (contact angle hysteresis of water), friction, and hardness. It was found that the contact angle hysteresis of water decreases with increasing cross-linking, achieving a constant value of 20−25° at 40−50% of cross-linking. Although the coefficient of friction is independent of the extent of cross-linking, the scratch hardness of the coating increases with the extent of cross-linking.
