    Abstract

A list of the nominations of Sir Christopher Kelk Ingold for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry is provided together with Ingold’s own summary of his research. An account of Ingold’s analysis of electronic effects in organic chemistry is given in comparison with the earlier analysis of Sir Robert Robinson. The importance of Ingold’s mechanistic studies on the way in which organic chemistry is now seen and taught is stressed. Consideration is given to the possible reasons why Ingold was never awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
