MESSAGING SERVICE Whatsapp has released an update to its Android app, adding support for Android Wear smarwatches.

While not yet available to download via Google Play, the updated app can be downloaded directly from the Whatsapp website and installed on any devices running Android 2.1 and above. However, to make use of the Android Wear functionality, it will need to be installed on a smartphone running Android 4.3 or higher.

Once loaded onto an Android Wear smartwatch, such as the LG G Watch or Samsung Gear Live, wearers will be able to view stacked Whatsapp notifications, reply to messages using voice, and will be able to respond using a number of preloaded replies, such as "yes", "lol", or "see you soon".

The update also allows users to see complete previews of received messages, rather than just a notification.

The latest Whatsapp release, version 2.11.318, can be downloaded directly from the Whatsapp website. It's not yet clear when the app will be rolled out to Google Play.

News of a Whatsapp Android Wear app comes a day after LG released a software update for its G Watch device, following reports from users that the smartwatch was causing skin irritation, and in some cases causing blisters and burns.

LG said in a statement, "Recently it has come to our attention that a small number of G Watch devices have been reported to have developed discolouration and residue buildup on the terminal pins located on the back.

"While completely safe and unlikely to affect charging, LG will be rolling out a maintenance release over the next few days that will disable the current when the G Watch is not in the charging dock." µ
