In a fortnight that saw St. Mark’s Bookshop, 69 Bayard, and Patricia Field close, here’s a moment to appreciate the spectacular places that continue to open in this town: our annual “Best of New York” issue, a subjective list of singular spaghetti joints, bike-repair shops, and VHS stores, most of which are new, some of which have remained industry secrets (until now). We also threw newness and secretiveness to the wind and anointed the absolute best (period) hot dogs, egg sandwiches, and more, a ranking that will surely evolve.
