The WikiLeaks Files: The World According to US Empire Hardcover – August 25, 2015

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 238 ratings

Published in collaboration with WikiLeaks: What Cablegate tells us about US foreign policy

When WikiLeaks first came to prominence in 2010 by releasing 2,325,961 top-secret State Department cables, the world saw for the first time what the US really thought about national leaders, friendly dictators and supposed allies. It also discovered the dark truths of national policies, human rights violations, covert operations and cover-ups.

The WikiLeaks Files is the first volume that uses experts to collate the most important cables and shows their historic importance. The book explores in a series of chapters covering the major regions of the world how the US Empire has imposed its will. It reveals how the US imposes its agenda on the world: a new form of imperialism that uses a variety of tactics from torture and military action, to trade deals and “soft power,” in order to expand its influence. It shows the details of the close relationship between government and big business in promoting US goods around the world.

The WikiLeaks Files is the most comprehensive analysis of US State department cables to date. The introduction by Julian Assange—for the first time—exposes the on-going debates on freedom of information, international surveillance and justice.

Regional expert contributors include Dan Beeton, Phyllis Bennis, Michael Busch, Peter Certo, Conn Hallinan, Sarah Harrison, Richard Heydarian, Dahr Jamail, Jake Johnston, Alexander Main, Robert Naiman, Francis Njubi Nesbitt, Linda Pearson, Gareth Porter, Tim Shorrock, Russ Wellen, and Stephen Zunes.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Long after the debate over the publication of these cables has been forgotten, the documents themselves will remain a valuable archive for scholars and students of US foreign policy. The essays that make up The WikiLeaks Files shed critical light on a once secret history. ”
—Edward J. Snowden, July 2015

“A deep dive into what the cables reveal about America’s dealings with a variety of states. It will be left to other books to argue whether WikiLeaks is right or wrong in their mission and approach. This one gives solid context to the cables themselves, explaining what they mean to the wider world.”
Kirkus Reviews

“Takes on a huge amount of data and delivers a thorough introduction to the narratives of US policy that the cables reveal [and] … makes the information in the cables accessible to a wide audience of readers who may not otherwise have the time or background knowledge to search through the data themselves.”
Publishers Weekly

“Provides accessible insight into nearly every major news topic of today.”
Portland Press Herald

“From government to big business, if you have a dirty secret, WikiLeaks is your nightmare.”
Guardian

“I’ve heard the impact of these releases on our foreign policy described as a meltdown, as a game-changer and so on ... Is this embarrassing? Yes. Is it awkward? Yes.”
—Bob Gates, US Secretary of Defense, 2010

“The guy ought to be ... and I’m not for the death penalty, so if I’m not for the death penalty, there’s only one way to do it: illegally shoot the son of a bitch.”
—Bob Beckel, Fox News

“The whole weighty book is a missile aimed at breaking the plate glass of US diplomacy and revealing its motivations.”
Sydney Morning Herald

Excellent journalism, high quality and level education for an INFORMED CITIZENRY.

REGARDING THE CONTENT OF THE WORK:
Reserve comment & opinion, however generally...
It seems an opportunity for redemption at the Global scale.

This is a carefully thought-out scholarly work. It provides a rare glimpse of the actual realities of the Empire. More importantly, it arms the readers with the ammunitions to confront the Empire and to transform the world. I pay special tribute to the authors for their restraint and objectivity in analyzing the files. I wish more and more people throughout the world would have the opportunity to read this book. The book should be translated in all major languages of the world.

This book is quite a thorough eye-opener on geopolitics. I have not been a believer in the US Mainstream Media for some time, but we all need alternative sources. This is a fairly comprehensive look at the relationship between the US and a number of other countries in recent years. Chapter by chapter, WikiLeaks source info combined with expert analysis provides real insight into actual US Policy and activities relating to all of these foreign countries, in contrast to the jive normally presented to the American public by the Mainstream Media.

The nature of US power, as the US government never wanted you to see. This is essential reading for those interested in the expression of unrivalled power as the US pushes for the ultimate expansion of its worldwide empire. This is the book necessitated by the media's neglect of the message, as it focuses still on the messenger. The message this book contains is a warning to the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read!
Reviewed in Canada on August 17, 2018
Well, most people in the world already know all this information. It's America and it's white allies that are so brainwashed that needs wikileaks to unbrainwash themselves because their mainstream media has them completely brain-dead that they cannot even put 2 and 2 together to make 4. It's like their corporations have them blindfolded and can shove them in any direction against anyone who has resources, particularly oil. I say buy this book in bulk and give it to them whenever they start repeating their media propaganda. They definitely need some real education.

Truly eye-opening and deeply captivating. I have always been enthralled by the conspiracy and the top secret. But this book makes you realise that there is no conspiracy, it is just a fact and an integral part of our life that much is done without our knowledge or consent. I would recommend this easily readable and nicely accessible book for any student of geopolitics. More so, I would urge any citizen of the world to buy this to truly understand the way our system is organised.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wie das Imperium arbeitet
Reviewed in Germany on November 5, 2015
