Their romance is icing on the cake

Guarding her heart and being on a cooking show might be more than she can handle. These characters are positively explosive together and when they finally realize they are meant for each other will simply be icing on the cake.

Oh boy, do I want Aubrey's Moscato sorbet and cherry walnut cookie ice cream sandwiches.

This was absolutely fun and cute. I really liked the little town of Weldon, and I really hope that we get to meet more residents in future books. I thought the one night stand, enemies to friends to lovers tropes were really well done and believable, and I CANNOT WAIT for the Daniel Dae Kim's adaptation. He's going to be SUCH a good Landon, and really, I just need more DDK on my screen as soon as possible.

Irritating plot points

I wanted to like this romance more than I ended up feeling about it. Some elements just irked me. The title mess starts out because Landon, a famous and wealthy food critic, ends up in Aubrey’s little town and buying a whole bundt cake that, while tasty, grossed him out because it had gummy worms in it. He writes a scathing review that dooms Aubrey’s business. Only later he finds out that the baker whose business he just destroyed is the same hot woman he had a night of smoking hot sex with while he was stuck in that small town. And that the cake he ate was actually a special order for a six-year old’s birthday party that Aubrey’s part-time teen worker allowed him to buy by mistake. He refuses to write a retraction or do a more balanced review because he doesn’t do second reviews and he also is afraid someone will find out that he slept with Aubrey and accuse him of giving a favorable review to a woman who slept with him. So instead, he gets her a feature on a new cooking show that he’s an executive producer of. And this feature will require the two of them to stay in a remote villa alone together for three weeks while she concocts new recipes. Yeah, like that wouldn’t raise more eyebrows than their one-night stand.

I kept thinking, wait a minute - what person orders a whole bundt cake with plans to eat it all on the spot, especially when the book sets up all the cute stores and eating establishments there are in this little town. And why couldn’t Landon issue a short retraction to his review? That just didn’t seem reasonable. And when Aubrey worries that all her online business is slowing down because of the review, couldn’t she have posted something on her website explaining what had happened and swear that people weren’t going to be surprised by mysterious gummy worms in their cakes? Or gone to a local reporter to write a story about what really happened? At least she could have done something instead of just stressing about it.

And then she goes camping alone and her car shuts down and she has to be rescued by Landon. And he arranges for her car to be towed and fixed and we never hear again about that car. Instead she has to depend on London to drive her around for three weeks.

And the whole explanation about why they have to be alone sharing this villa was just stupid. If Landon was really worried about their reputations, he could have put her up in a local motel and then arranged for her to have access to a kitchen.

And I didn’t buy that Landon had sold his food blog for millions of dollars. The only value for a personal blog is if the author keeps writing it. Why would some company pay all that money and not keep him on writing it? It just didn’t make sense

There were too many of these little things that bugged me and it all was piled on a plot being driven by two characters feeling such strong insta-lust for each other that it apparently takes superhuman will for them to resist passionately shagging each other every moment they’re together.

A delightful Rom-Com that kept me flipping pages on my Kindle

‘A Sweet Mess‘ captured my imagination from the start, and while I did have some questions, maybe issues with parts of the book, that didn’t take away from the overall enjoyment factor of one mistake, one scathing review, and two people discovering that love happens when it feels like it, fast or slow, there is no denying when attraction turns into so much more.

Landon’s flat tire brought him to Aubrey’s bakery – and to that mistake of the wrong cake being served to a food critic. And maybe because he’d had a crap day so far that (unknown to him) mistake earned a cutting review from this well-known food critic that practically ruins Aubrey’s pride and joy – her bakery. Then to add fuel to an already explosive situation they manage to meet at a local bar, have sparks fly, and a one time, one unbelievably sensuous night together before they discover exactly who the other is. Awkward, to say the least. And each has their own idea of why and how that one night came to be… which, of course, were the wrong ideas.

Although Landon does realize his mistake, he cannot do a second review to make up for his part in the troubles Aubrey faces with her business now. But… he can and does offer her the chance of a lifetime to take part in a reality show that would make her a household name… should she do well.

And the rest — well, you’ll need to discover for yourself.

I had fun with ‘A Sweet Mess‘, for the most part, and since I read an e-ARC I don’t know (yet) if those things that kept this from being a total winner for me have been edited. Yet, in the end, it really is a good book with a delightfully wicked sense of humor and characters who come across as real with their own issues that connect in unusual circumstances.

To be frank, I do wish the cover had been different, perhaps real people for from that cover no one can instantly tell that this is a Korean couple. I’ve read this author before and that book (and the next one out) is beyond sexy with real people and conveyed so much about the couple just by the picture… I wish this book had that type of cover – it’s an opinion, obviously, but then any review is just an opinion as well. I’d recommend ‘A Sweet Mess’ for those who love Rom-Com and a good love story to give this one a try. It’s a good romance, one you don’t want to miss.

**as an addition after this review had been written** I did learn last night through the author’s Twitter that “A Sweet Mess” has been picked up as a movie! Which is beyond exciting for the author, I’m sure. I will watch that movie, for it will be fascinating to see how the written word is transformed by the digital camera into breathing people and facial expressions. Looking forward to that.

There was sweet, there was salty, there were tears and laughter. I loved this book, even if the ending got a bit muddled for me on Bree's decisions, but I got that delicious romance-book flavor with every bite. I loved that some of the moments I feared would be tropish weren't, and while sure, maybe some of the sexual tension was a bit much, it was still utterly delightful! A++, looking forward to much more from this author.

I liked the food scenes, and, some of the dialogue was funny, but, I could only get half way through it. The "almost" sex angst was played one time too many, and, totally unbelievable, even for fiction.
