The fight for human rights never sleeps.
About us
Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 10 million people who take injustice personally. We are campaigning for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all. We are funded by members and people like you. We are independent of any political ideology, economic interest or religion. No government is beyond scrutiny. No situation is beyond hope. WHAT DOES AMNESTY DO? We investigate and expose the facts, whenever and wherever abuses happen. We lobby governments, and other powerful groups such as companies. Making sure they keep their promises and respect international law. By telling the powerful stories of the people we work with, we mobilize millions of supporters around the world to campaign for change and to stand in defence of activists on the frontline. We support people to claim their rights through education and training.

📢 Happy to share brand new research by Amnesty International - “Being Ourselves is Too Dangerous”: Digital Violence and the Silencing of Women and LGBTI activists in Thailand: https://lnkd.in/ezt6j9Dz Our research documents the experiences of LGBTI and women human rights defenders in Thailand who have endured technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TfGBV) as a means to silence them. Tactics include targeted digital surveillance with Pegasus spyware, and online harassment. Women, girls and LGBTI activists rely on the online space to come together, organize, and resist ✊✊🏽✊🏿. Everyone should be able to freely express themselves online without risk to their safety and wellbeing. In this video, three activists - Anchana, Niraphorn, and Manun - share their experiences of TfGBV in their own words. I'm very proud to have worked on this project alongside them and many other Thai LGBTI and women activists, plus incredible colleagues at Amnesty ❤️ https://lnkd.in/eaV_pHk8

Our homes are not mere stones and tiles. They are where we safeguard our memories, seek our comfort, and find our safe space. Since 2010, over 80,000 Palestinian homes and structures have been destroyed across Israel and the Occupied Palestinian territories as a result of home demolitions, military offensives & incursions, and state-backed settler violence. In the besieged and occupied Gaza Strip alone, over 70,000 housing units have been destroyed since October last year. Nearly 90% of Gaza’s population have been internally-displaced, many on multiple occasions, with nowhere safe to go. Repeated mass waves of displacement have torn Gaza’s social fabric apart. Since the Nakba of 1948, uprooting Palestinians and denying them a home, even the sense of home, have been at the heart of Israel’s apartheid system.

Last week, we joined a coalition of NGOs to come together for a Global Day of Action. We called for States to #StopSendingArms that are fuelling violations of international law in the occupied Gaza Strip. All states must immediately halt the transfer of weapons, parts and ammunition to Israel and Palestinian armed groups while there is a risk they could be used to commit or facilitate serious violations of international law. Given that the International Court of Justice has found a plausible risk of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, states that continue to transfer arms to Israel are failing to prevent genocide and could contribute to its commission along with that of other international crimes.

Imagine not being able to share your opinions, meet with your football club or demonstrate for something you believe in. Many countries are trying to limit these freedoms. Discover how to defend them with this online course: Freedom of Expression, A Fundamental Right: http://amn.st/6044R9ujy

At least 92 Palestinian journalists have been killed in the occupied Gaza Strip over the last 6 months. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, no other war has taken so many journalists’ lives in such a short span over the course of the last 30 years. According to Addameer, at least 45 Palestinian journalists are currently held in Israeli custody. 23 of them are held under administrative detention, while others are subject to enforced disappearances, their fate unknown. Journalists have an essential job to document the reality on the ground and combat disinformation. This #WorldPressFreedomDay, we reiterate this - journalists are not targets and MUST be protected.

It's #InternationalWorkersDay, and we're reminding you that no one should be forced in any way to work. Although the right to work is not the right to a job, it is a right to opportunities and conditions that can secure you decent work, enabling an adequate standard of living for you and your family. However, there is widespread violation of workers’ rights. Millions of people are forced to work against their will, or work in degrading and unfair conditions. Others, due to lack of opportunity, have little choice but to take jobs in the “gig economy”, often meaning long hours, precarious contracts and unreliable pay. Migrant workers are often among the worst exploited, and people can be manipulated into doing difficult and dangerous jobs with no protections from unscrupulous employers. This can lead to scenarios of what we call forced labour, which is a form of modern slavery. This #InternationalWorkersDay, learn more about what we're doing to promote workers rights around the world: http://amn.st/6042jyk7u
