The Library of Congress added 25 films to the National Film Registry yesterday, including "The Manchurian Candidate," the original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and the Zapruder film of the John F. Kennedy assassination.

The additions to the registry were announced by James H. Billington, the librarian of Congress, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York during a meeting of the National Film Preservation Board. The board advises the librarian of Congress on the selection of films for the registry and on national film preservation policy.

These are the 25 films:

"E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" (1982)

"Force of Evil" (1948)

"Freaks" (1932)

"Hell's Hinges" (1916)

"Hospital" (1970)

"Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1956)

"The Lady Eve" (1941)

"Louisiana Story" (1948)

"The Manchurian Candidate" (1962)

"Marty" (1955)

"Meet Me in St. Louis" (1944)

"Midnight Cowboy" (1969)

"A Movie" (1958)

"Pinocchio" (1940)

"Safety Last" (1923)

"Scarface" (1932)

"Snow White" (1937)

"Tabu" (1933)

"Taxi Driver" (1976)

"Zapruder Film" (1963)

The registry, established in 1988, now numbers 150 films selected for preservation at the Library of Congress.
