Short Circuit is a hip, sexless sci-fi sendup featuring a Defense Dept robot who comes ‘alive’ to become a pop-talking peacenik.

Robot is the one-dimensional No. 5, the ultimate weapon designed by playful computer whiz Dr Newton Crosby (Steve Guttenberg).

By a fluke, No. 5 gets short-circuited and begins to malfunction. It finds itself outside the high-security Nova compound in a chase that lands it on top of a natural foods catering truck and under the influence of its sweet but tough animal-loving owner, Stephanie (Ally Sheedy). Scripters get credit for some terrific dialog that would have been a lot less disarming if not for the winsome robot and Sheedy’s affection for it. Guttenberg plays his best goofy self.
