I feel like every year we see an update from Google to the notification area. I'm sure it was the main feature for at least 3 years now?

[–]fufunekai 135 points136 points  (5 children)

The notification panel looks like a badly coded responsive website.

[–]Eidoss_Galaxy S21 75 points76 points  (1 child)

It looks like they increased the vertical padding even more now. Pretty soon you'll only be able to see 2 notifications without scrolling.

[–]memtigerGoogle Pixel 6 Pro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Try looking at the notifications when in landscape and the media panel is up. There's barely enough room for the mini notification icons to display. It's abysmal.

Optimists here will tell you not to worry, Google will have it flashed out by release...

[–]chupitoelpameGalaxy Fold4 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, like they did with the garbage on Android 11... wait...

It's really poor UI design that "Silent" and "Manage" are the same distance away from the charging notification. Gestalt principles. Cmon.

[–]zeroillusions 53 points54 points  (3 children)

It feels like they're trying to fit as little on screen as possible

[–]Disgruntled_Rabbit 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Yeah, everything is so spread out and there's so much padding around the boxes. Can't say I'm a fan, feels like a step back..

Well, if they really give it their all, they might be able to fit as little as 2 shortcuts next to each other. I mean, everything is an improvement over 5 or 6, but I feel we can go lower!

/s just in case

I have a giant, high-resolution screen that I paid good money for. Why is the modern design language for so many things, especially Google apps, to "convey as little useful information as possible while wasting all of your screen real estate on overly large icons and UI elements alongside ridiculous amounts of padding"?

The notification shade on fucking Android 2.0 on my OG Droid presented more information at a glance.

Don't even get me started on how ineffectively Android TV utilizes my TV's 75 inches of 4K real estate to present one row of apps and 1-2 channel widgets on the homescreen or a whole 1.75 rows of Youtube videos in the Youtube app.

Our customers are idiots! Don't overload their pea brains!

We need blur!!

[–]NohumornocryGalaxy S21 Ultra 10 points11 points  (1 child)

This. The notification pan color bleeds into the wallpaper because there is no gaussian blur.

[–]simplefilmreviewsBlack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I hope it means blur is coming and just not implemented. Because currently the screenshots that people are showing, look terrrrrribblllle.

[–]gasparthehaunterMi 9t pro, Android 14 (EvoX) 0 points1 point  (3 children)

There already is in Android 11 it's just not on by default

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of how the new notification shade looks. I feel they should have left it alone and leave it how it looked in Android 11 or blur the background instead of leaving it opaque.

Tbh it's been a while since I liked the bright theme in android

mostly looks cartoonish, maybe I only go dark theme for a while and see how it feels

[–]mooglechoco_ 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Looking promising. If Stock Android 12 already looks like this imagine what One UI 4.0 would look like!

[–]CrypticWatermelonGalaxy a52s 5g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine the roles get reversed and Samsung goes more the direction of stock android 11

[–]roombaonfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So much wasted empty space...

[–]Lepang8Google Pixel 7 Pro, Android 14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just horrible. I know, nothing should be cluttered. But this is just too much padding and wasted space.

[–]SixDigitCodeOnePlus 6T, Android 11 14 points15 points  (7 children)

Not a fan of the 3x3 Quick Settings grid but everything else looks awesome!

[–]ArbabenderPixel 5, Sorta Sage 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I for one will welcome the return of the 3x3 expanded quick settings tray, assuming it sticks the landing. The 2x3 layout in Android 11 felt too sparse coming from Android 10 where I had nine quick settings that I fairly regularly used.

[–]hotvimto1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There looks to be enough space for 4 x 4.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Same, why did they do that ?

As someone who use quicks settings a lot, having to scroll is anoying.

[–]FlyingCow_7Device, Software !! 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Well it’s android so you can probably choose whatever you want

[–]donnysaysvacuumI just want a small phone 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Not on stock android.

[–]FlyingCow_7Device, Software !! 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh that's true yeah

[–]Pew-Pew-Pew-Pixel 7 Pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks bad with the huge horizontal spacing and tight vertical spacing.

But it would be much improved if they bring the 3x3 back instead of the current 3x2 that we have now on 11. Seriously why do we have 6 toggles when we pull down the shade once, and then we expand quick settings and... Those 6 toggles are still all I see but now they're extremely spaced out with labels suddenly visible? There's no reason to expand quick settings currently except to scroll to the second page.

[–]JangoF76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely feels like a first draft, but has potential

[–]Renaldi_the_MultiDevice, Software !! 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3x3 toggles are back! Yes!

Information density is somehow even lower! No!

[–]Carter0108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That brightness slider is fucking hideous.

[–]confusion08Google pixel 7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why everything must be so round?

[–]bionic_squashBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am guessing that we are only going to see the new ui on android 13.

[–]Luke_Il_sungS21 Ultra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can we get the android 8 notification bar back. It's so much easier to adjust settings without going in to settings

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus Christ this is utterly horrendous. Why would anyone want so little information presented on screen at once? Unless this is a screenshot from one of those tiny jelly phones or something, there is absolutely no justification for wasting that much space.

[–]yaillbro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked the really old version of android where you could get wifi connected without having to get out of the app. Then I accidentally updated

[–]cryptoranon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looks shit like my oxygen os 11 or oneui

[–]RobinDebank420 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

So MIUI eh

[–]MrFrostyBudds -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh God are they bringing back that awful grey color :(((

[–]omgitzmoDevice, Software !! 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does the nav bar show up on the lock screen? Is it intentional or a bug?

[–]simplefilmreviewsBlack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow so does this mean no blur? instead itll just be dark/light mode, with notification boxes being darker?

[–]rolezki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The notification UI looks really horrible imo, although i have always hated the look of notification UI on android so yeah nothing has really changed on that :p
